I know this is an out-of-area question but this is one of the best and active forums around and maybe someone can help. I'm looking for info regarding the Hems family in North London (Stoke Newington) before about 1750. I'm part of a group who have combined our trees (see http://www.hemsearch.juxon.net/index.php - login using the word visitor as username and password to get access if you want to see what we're doing). Some of us were in contact with a member of the Guild of One Name Studies (Barbara Bassil) who gave us some basic info on the earliest generations we know, but she lost her sight in recent years and died last year aged 90. What we don't know is her sources for these early parts of the tree. Church records are good but there are no records of the families over several generations. Several of the group remember Barbara mentioning dissenters (non- Church of England people) in the past so I guess this could be where we should be looking. The question is where? Does anyone have any good recommendations as to where to find this sort of info? John
http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/ have a lot of non-conformist records - their sub is not cheap though :( but I think you can get a free trial. John , A good source is Dr. Williams Library, London , WWW.dwlib.co.uk Dr. Williams collected much info. on dissenters . The registers of baps. start about 1720. They have other data as well . A lot of dissenters are buried in Bunhill Fields in London . Over 120, 000 burials . I visited it 2 years ago , and found it most interesting. REv. William Jenkins who died at Newgate 1684 is among them . His mother was a dau. of John Rogers . His funeral prcession included over 150 coachs and his dau. gave out rings which really ticked off the King . Daniel Defoe is the most famous person there . THere is an office at the cem . that has records of who is interred within . Wesley's church is accoss the street . His mother Susannah is buried there. You can Google "Bunhill Fields " for good info. but the online list is very incomplete , so best to visit in person . The cemetery is near the Society of Genealogists , which is another good source of info. . Other cems. nearby are at Wesley Chapel, and Quaker Gardens .
