Firstly, does anyone have an interest in either John PAGE or Ansley HARMER (HARTFIELD) who got married at Tonbridge, Kent near the end of 1865 (GRO Tunbridge 2a 879), please? Or does anyone have an interest in a Solomon DINNAGE (or deriviation) born about 1848 at Heathfield, Sussex? Ansley was born as Anslie HARTFIELD in 1846 at Ticehurst, Sussex out of wed-lock (just over the border from Kent) and assumed the surname of HARMER when her mother and her children (including Ansley) went to live with Jospeh HARMER She got married to John PAGE in the name of HARMER. The marriage does not appear to have lasted very long because in the 1871 Census, Ansley is living at Burwash, Sussex with her deceased mother's husband Joseph HARMER. She is shown aged 25 as Joseph's (aged 57) wife (but I think this must be wrong and the enumerator may have got confused!) and her siblings, all of whom were born out of wedlock before her mother married Joseph. Also living with them was a boarder, Solomon DINIGE (correct name DINNAGE) aged 32, born Heathfield, Sussex, who Ansley set up home with at Eastbourne, Sussex by the 1881 Census. They lived together at Eastbourne until Ansley died in 1911. They got married at Hastings, Sussex in 1898 when Ansley used the surname HARMER. There is a reference to a John PAGE in the book `Victoria Village - The Diaries of the Reverand John Coker Egerton of Burwash 1857-1888ยด edited by Roger Wells ((ISBN 0 7509 0287). On page 208 under the date 29 June 1878 is the following entry: "In evening, Mr TAYLOR called on me with a request from a poor man of ye name TRIBE who years [ago] lived in ye parish that I would inform him how to get a divorce as I knew all about his wife. All I could do was to recommend him to apply to a man of the name of John PAGE who had latterly got a divorce from a very bad wife." This John PAGE appears to be the same one who married Ansley HARMER at Tonbridge because a search of the National Archives web-site reveals a Divorce Court File: 3847. Appellant: John PAGE. Respondent: Ansley PAGE. Co-respondent: [...] DINEAGE. Type: Husband's petition for divorce [hd]. Covering dates 1875. It appears Ansley formed a relationship with Solomon DINNAGE while still married to John PAGE, and John cited Solomon as co-respondent in his petition for divorce against Ansley. As some of my PAGE ancestors come from Burwash, I am trying to find out if John PAGE is one of them. Why he and Ansley got married in Tonbridge is a bit of a mystery as Ansley was born at Burwash, Sussex and in the 1861 Census she was employed as a live-in servant at Eastbourne, Sussex. Perhaps John PAGE came from Tonbridge? I have ordered a copy of the Marriage Certificate and perhaps this will give some clues. Does anyone have access to the Baptisms Register for Tonbridge, Kent or Burwash, Sussex who can tell me if they had any children between 1865 and 1871, please? Sorry this has become rather complicated but thanks for any help and/or suggestions? Chris Page
