I'm looking for info regarding the Hems family in North London (Stoke Newington) before about 1750. I'm part of a group who have combined our trees (see http://www.hemsearch.juxon.net/index.php - login using the word visitor as username and password to get access if you want to see what we're doing). Some of us were in contact with a member of the Guild of One Name Studies (Barbara Bassil) who gave us some basic info on the earliest generations we know, but she lost her sight in recent years and died last year aged 90. What we don't know is her sources for these early parts of the tree. Church records are good but there are no records of the families over several generations. Several of the group remember Barbara mentioning dissenters (non- Church of England people) in the past so I guess this could be where we should be looking. The question is where? Does anyone have any good recommendations as to where to find this sort of info? John
