Hi everyone, I'm new to this list and wonder if anybody can assist with my query. We have an August 1897 marriage certificate of Sarah Ann Wall (widow, nee McGilloway) marrying Joseph Richmond (36, father william deceased farm labourer) at register office Hollingbourne. Residence for Joseph (a domstic coachman) is Wichling Rectory and for Sarah Ann is just Wichling. What we are looking for is was Joseph emploed by the Rector, if so how long? Did his family come from the Kent area? what was Sarah Ann doing in Wichling as her marriage to L A Wall had been in Winchester. We know that by 1898 they had moved to Leicestershire and subsequetnly had three sons, Did the Rector move at the same period? Are there any records for Wichling on line for this period. Lots of questions I know but if one doesn't ask one doesn't get. Thanks for your time in reading this request. peter elliott
Hello Peter, >From my research on domestic coachmen from my own family history, it is very probable that for some reason or other your coachman was offered a better paid job, possibly by a visitor staying at the rectory. One of my men moved to Nottinghamshire where he married. He moved from there to Lincoln and then to Sleaford. By 1901 he had possibly retired and was living in Doncaster. There he was driving horse drawn busses. He died 1902 having been born near Faversham, Kent. Two of his sons became grooms/coachmen on large estates in the Midlands. Good huntin' Dennis Bramble. ----- Original Message ----- From: "PETER ELLIOTT" <peterg45@btinternet.com> To: <KENT-ENG@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 19, 2010 9:17 AM Subject: [KENT-ENG] Joseph Richmond Wichling Rectory > Hi everyone, > I'm new to this list and wonder if anybody can assist with my query. > We have an August 1897 marriage certificate of Sarah Ann Wall (widow, nee > McGilloway) marrying Joseph Richmond (36, father william deceased farm > labourer) at register office Hollingbourne. > Residence for Joseph (a domstic coachman) is Wichling Rectory and for > Sarah Ann is just Wichling. > What we are looking for is was Joseph emploed by the Rector, if so how > long? > Did his family come from the Kent area? what was Sarah Ann doing in > Wichling as her marriage to L A Wall had been in Winchester. > We know that by 1898 they had moved to Leicestershire and subsequetnly had > three sons, Did the Rector move at the same period? > Are there any records for Wichling on line for this period. > Lots of questions I know but if one doesn't ask one doesn't get. > Thanks for your time in reading this request. > peter elliott > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > KENT-ENG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > ______________________________________________ > This email has been scanned by Netintelligence > http://www.netintelligence.com/email >
Hi Peter http://www.faversham.org/pages/standard.aspx?i_PageID=112079 Faversham home page Try contacting the Church themselves. http://gen.culpepper.com/Archives/uk/places/wichling.htm Picture of the Church http://www.british-history.ac.uk/place.aspx May have information on Wichling and the Vicar A good starting point for things like this. I presume you have found your man on censuses? there's a Joseph richmond in 1891 in evington Leceistershire, so perhaps he returned home in 1898.
