    1. [KENT-ENG] OFF TOPIC Nova Scotia help - THISTLETON
    2. Hi I wonder if anyone with local knowledge would be able to help with my ancestor : William Turner Thistleton, born America. Attestation papers to serve in the Royal Marines at Chatham 1839 (when aged 21). Discharged 1859 as Length of service. I have obtained this document from Kew and place of birth is 'America, Nova Scotia' so a bit of a quandry to start with as I *thought* NS was Canada. I have looked at all I can on my UK sub to Ancestry but this does not extend to the Canadian databases. (Particularly the tantalising 5 entries on the Canadian Genealogy Index!!) Please does anyone know of any free web sources I can try as I cannot really afford to go global on Ancestry right now. Of particular interest are Canadian Passenger lists, parish register, military lists of personnel in Nova Scotia c.1817-1820 or any census type info. I know he was back in Rochester, Kent, UK in 1849 for his marriage to Eleanor Goodchild although I have never found him on any census. His wife and children are always on their own. His parents William Thistleton and Ann married in Rochester, Kent 1813 William Turner Thistleton was born c.1818 = supposed Nova Scotia Siblings baptised in Chatham 1818 and 1823 and Knaresborough, 1831 & 1837. 1841 census NOT with his parents and siblings in Knaresborough, Yorks. Fathers occupation 'Barber P' Possibility he did this job in the armed forces, poss R Marines as baptism records show him as a Sergent of Marines. My main quest is to find evidence of his birth in Nova Scotia. Thank you in advance Lozzie T
