I am trying to find the location of the birth of my ancestor John Tomlin/Tomlyn. I believe he was born circa 1773/5 in East Malling Kent. He married a Mary Davis in Hastings E. Sussex in December 1800. He died in 1809 and the tory in the family is that he was killed in a fight between smugglers and preventatives. There is a strong possibility that he was a seafensible (a sort of naval home guard) which was formed during the Naspoleonic wars to not only to fight the French and stop any invasions but also to curtail the activities of the smugglers. He was admitted to a masdonic lodge in his late 20's and at that time decribed himself as a mariner. I would love it if someone could help me in this search. Thank you very much Doris Flynn in B.C.
