Could anyone tell me how I can find the background to William SPICER, who appears on the 1881 census. He is aged 20 and is the footman to George DUPPA, residing at HOLLINGBROURNE HOUSE kENT. My reason for this inquiry is that my husbands grandfather William SPICER, although he lived in South Wales states on all the census in Wales that he was born in West Ashford. He makes this claim on his marriage certificate and gives his father as John deceased. Having looked at the DUPPA family I have ascertain that they had connection with the West Country bordering on Wales, and the family story was that James walked to Wales from somewhere in Kent beginning with H; of cos you don't think to ask questions when you are a kid, also William was a Waiter all his working life and spent two weeks every year at OKEHAMPTON ARTILLERY CAMP as a waiter. We don't know what the connection is with him working at Okehampton every year or how he became involved, if he is the William at Hollingbourne he may have been recommended by the Duppa's I believe they had millitary connections. Barbara, The first step is to find William in the 1871 census with his family. The 1881 census says he was born in Folkestone so this should be fairly straightforward. Although the '81 census return says he was age 20 FreeBMD only has one entry in the Elham RD (this includes Folkestone) for William Henry Spicer registered Q3 1862. I have done quite a bit of Spicer research in Kent but mainly with a different line but all going back to the Pluckley, Hollingbourne area. I have a William Spicer born 1862 at Folkestone son of Edward Nook Spicer and Sarah Alice Waterman. William had siblings Julia, Edward, Alice, Richard, John, Alfred, Alberta, Sarah and Beatrice. Edward Nook's parents were Richard and Margaret Penny from Dover which is where my lot come from and one was born at Dover Castle Keith -----Original Message----- From: kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter Sent: Friday, 23 April 2010 1:26 AM To: KENT-ENG@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] William SPICER Barbara, The first step is to find William in the 1871 census with his family.
