All records will be in German but list members would be able to translate for you if the German authorities can't provide a translation. This will take you to all the German lists available: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/DEU/ Otherwise go to http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/index.html Or more specifically: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/DEU/DEUTSCHLAND.html As with many lists, it's very quiet and despite it saying the language is "strictly German", every post I looked at was in English! There's also a newsgroup for Germany which is gatewayed to Rootsweb. I've had a lot of help from them with past queries: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Newsgroup_Gateways/GEN-DE.html There's a mix of German and English language there. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
You could try using "Babelfish" - on line computer translation - although it might have difficulty if you are going very far back. (Also - I seem to remember that Bavarian and Austria have dialects somewhat different to "standard" German) In message <4BCD9761.5040200@blueyonder.co.uk>, gary hodge <jhdl10848@blueyonder.co.uk> writes >Hi > >How do I go about getting german records .in english if pos. > >gary hodge > > > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >KENT-ENG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- Chris Whitehead
Hi Gary, try searching the LDS family search website (library catalogue), I know people at our LDS that research the German and Dutch records. The films can be ordered via your local LDS. However the ones I have seen are in German. the lady I know brings her mother with her to translate. However, I have been told that Dutch and German records have wonderful indicators in the naming patterns which makes research a bit easier. Your local LDS will have a booklet on how to research records from various countries.
