    3. Hi:   I am trying to help my friend find her deceased father's family.  We live in Canada and all she has on him is Hugh John MARTIN, born 23 July 1921 in Cranbrook.  Parents names perhaps Stephen and Elizabeth.   The family moved to India in the 1930's, the elder Martin being an engineer.  They moved back to England after the war, where her father went to university and emigrated to Montreal, Canada in the 1950's. Hugh Martin fought with the Indian Army in WW II.   Having said all that, I can find no Hugh John Martin birth in that quarter in Cranbrook. Does anyone have access to Cranbrook baptisms for that time frame?   If I could find his birth I could certainly go backwards and help her, but coming forward seems harder!!   Thanks for any help given, Linda Ontario, Canada

    3. Hi Linda, A quick look on FreeBMD found a John MARTIN born in Cranbrook RD in Q3 1921, mother's maiden name CROWTHER. A search of marriages turns up Stephen MARTIN marrying Beatrice E. CROWTHER in Ticehurst RD in 1921. This is very close to your friend's information. No Hugh, but perhaps it was added later and not listed when the birth was registered. The mother's initial E could be for Elizabeth. Looking back on the births, the same parents seem to have had a daughter Joan E. MARTIN born in Q3 1925 in the Cranbrook RD. Did your friend have an Aunt Joan?
