Hi My family left Kent around 1908, but some remained in Lewisham area: including Lee and Catford.. I would like to do some research in Lewisham . I have been told it is now a very rough place and I have been advised not to go there. My main interest would be in checking out the cemeteries and probably looking at the streets which I have found in the census records. Can anyone give me same advice as to what I should do? Hi Elaine The London Borough of Lewisham is certainly not what it used to be but it is not a 'no go' area. You need to be sensible about where you keep your purse etc in much the same way as any area with lots of people, and if you look scared you will be the focus of unwanted attention wherever you are. If you go there, just make sure you know exactly where you want to go, that way you are less likely to look lost and helpless. Google gives you access to bus and train timetables and taxi companies so you should be able to have everything in place before you go. Of course, you may not even have to go there! Google street view [apparently now on google Earth] will have a lot of what you might be looking for anyway. The North West Kent Family History site may also help you with the cemeteries. I found two of my ancestors in the Ladywell/Brockley cemetery transcriptions. Not sure if they have the others cemetaries on there but the two other cemeteries in the area are Hither Green [in Verdant Lane SE6] and Grove Park [Marvels Lane SE12] you can even see the graves on the satellite view on Google.
