    3. When I first got to use the IGI in the days when it was just on microfilm and before the internet, I was given some very good advice by someone at the SoG (Society of Genealogists in London). It is that the IGI and any other similar indexes (handwritten, microfilmed, on-line or wherever) must only be used as a guide to find the real records which must be the base of our research into our past. Until you see the actual or facsimile copy of a document recording an event you don't have any proof. Indexes are a great guide to finding the real documents but never use them as your base research. These indexes have been compiled by one or more people who presumably have seen the original documents wherever they may be. Use the information given to find those records yourself. Until you find the originals you cannot confirm the data you add to your tree. Happy hunting everyone John
