    1. [KENT-ENG] FOSTER RECORDS
    2. Hi Everyone Would any one know where I could go and look up Foster Records in England. The reason I am asking is I am helping a cousin with her family tree. The person we are trying to find is a Alfred James Bicknell who fostered a child called Rosie Florence Cane. She was born about 1911 Brighton England and what I was told she was at Prestons Manor in a cottage which was part of the estate. After which Alfred Bicknell came to Australia. That is why Florence ended up being Rosie Florence Cane-Bicknell. Any suggestions would be of great help. Kind Regards Grahame James Grahame James

They're confidential between the foster carers and the relevant local authority. That said, I don't think there was any formal fostering arrangements back as far as 1911. It would have been a local agreement between the church or children's home and the person concerned or privately between members of the extended family. You have the name of the child, can you not find her birth in FreeBMD or on Ancestry? -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Hello Graham, The 1901 census lists three Alfred Bicknell names. All in Sussex. One of the names has in fact an adopted daughter in 1901. Could this be the same person that adopted Rosie? Rosie is recorded as being born at Brighton in 4Q.1911, ref; 2b 354. 3. Hello Graham, I doubt if there would be any formal records of fostering then then. 3. Hello again Grahame Just a thought - I don't think he was Alfred *James* Bicknell but Alfred *Edwin* for two reasons: There's no Alfred James born in Godalming (or indeed anywhere) in 1886/7 but there is this Births Sep 1886 Bicknell Alfred Edwin Guildford 2a 95 Godalming is in the Guildford Registration district There's no Alfred James Bicknell married to an Ellen in 1907/8 but there is this Marriages Dec 1907 BICKNELL Alfred Edwin Hambledon 2a 321 DENDY Ellen Hambledon 2a 321 Births Jun 1887 Dendy Ellen Horsham 2b 313 which ties in with her birthplace on the 1911 census In 1901 Alfred Bicknell age 15 b Godalming is a page (domestic) at the Kings Arms in Godalming High Street.
