Can someone tell me if Woolwich is still part of Kent or is it now in London. Have a birth/christening in 1801/02 that has come as a bit of surprise, have found the marriage in St George Camberwell in 1826, but in 1801/02 they shifted from Kemsing to Deptford, where their first child was born, [as I thought] and now this other child has popped up, and for the life of me I can't find where he was born, have wondered if he was Illegitimate. Keith.
What we know as Greater London today was part of the counties of Kent, Surrey, Middlesex and Essex, as well as the City of London, at the period you mentioned. Woolwich was in Kent then. People moved around a lot so don't be too rigid in your searching - the distances involved are quite small (Kemsing to Deptford is only 24 miles). What name are you looking for ? Woolwich formed part of Kent until 1889 when the County of London was created. It was once a small Kentish village until its position on the south bank of the river Thames made it a suitable base and a leading military and industrial town. It was home to the Woolwich Dockyard (founded in 1512), the Royal Arsenal (dating back to 1471), the Royal Military Academy (1741) and the Royal Horse Artillery (1793); Woolwich is now a town ship within the London Borough of Greenwich and whilst the military enterprise has now gone and so has the famous football club named after it (to North London) it is however famous for the great football team next door at Charlton!!
