    1. [KENT-ENG] Departure of George COOK from Kent England bound for New Zealand between 1845 - 1849

    3. HI to all on the list It's been a while since I posted to the list but I get the Digest form everyday to keep up to speed with postings. I have a question and was hoping someone on this list might be able to shed some light. My George William Cook (a copper miner) emigrated from Wappenham, Kent, between 1845 - 1849 (aged 22 - 26yrs) to Wellington, New Zealand. Can someone please advise what shipping records exist in England which could identify his departure? Alternatively, surely there would not have been too many departures from England to New Zealand during the period of 1845-1849. Is anyone able to identify the name of the ships? Here in NSW we have published journals which list assisted and unassisted immigrants to NSW but I have no way of accessing English ships who landed in Wellington, NZ. Any help would be greatly appeciated. Kind regards Cherylanne.

    3. Hi Cherylanne I found details of my gg-grandfather's arrival in New Zealand on the Papers Past site. That gave the ship's name and then I was able to work the rest out by going the the Tomes Archive online to work out date and place of departure. There are actually a lot of ships travelling at any one time during this period. And don't forget he may have set out to go elsewhere, changed his mind and went to New Zealand instead. Good luck Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl-Anne Bailey" <sherryk@netspace.net.au> To: <kent-eng@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 25, 2010 11:11 AM Subject: [KENT-ENG] Departure of George COOK from Kent England bound for NewZealand between 1845 - 1849 > HI to all on the list > > It's been a while since I posted to the list but I get the Digest form > everyday to keep up to speed with postings. > > I have a question and was hoping someone on this list might be able to > shed some light. > > My George William Cook (a copper miner) emigrated from Wappenham, Kent, > between 1845 - 1849 (aged 22 - 26yrs) to Wellington, New Zealand. > > Can someone please advise what shipping records exist in England which > could identify his departure? 3. Hello Cheryl-Ann, Just in case this may help. James BRAMBLE of Badlesmere near Faversham married Sarah Ann Justice at Hoo in 1848. Two years later they travelled as assisted emigrants to Sydney N.S.W. They travelled on the vessel, "Cornwall" from Devonport, Devon. Now better known as Plymouth. Devonport being part of Plymouth. The record is in the archives at Sydney, see 1850. Regards, Dennis Bramble. 3. Hi I have had the experience of trying to locate unassisted immigrants fro Kent to NZ. Unfortunately those listed in the on-line records are usually the more affluent passengers paying for first or saloon class cabins. I found mine after many hours of trawling through films of the passenger lists held at our local library, although they were later, in the 1870's. Papers Past is an excellent site, or try NZ Archives in Wellington. They have a card index and would do a look-up for you.
