There seem to be some new subscribers to this rootsweb list. May I suggest that no matter what region of the world you are researching, giving surnames alone is not generally going to get the responses you desire. What century are you talking about? Were your people in Kent for several centuries? Each query needs: 1) surname at least, given names preferred; 2) place--if Kent, then we assume that, but if you can be more exact, please do so 3) WHEN? Was it at the Battle of Hastings? Or, was it last year?. So, so to sum up what your query needs--online or in a publication: Name Place Date - approximation is OK. You must have some clue. I don't know about you, but my English people (my maternal line) were migratory, and many genealogists, professional and otherwise, discover this about their own lines My grandmother's line started out in Suffolk (birth and marriage), migrated to area near Melbourne, then migrated to Kent, then to East Sussex, and then to the USA--all in one generation!!! And the widowed mother came back to England--to Bedfordshire, but died in Kent!!! Civil registration and censuses helped but so did a brief recorded family history by my uncle, American born. I have heard lectures about labor fairs, held each year. Tenants frequently had to vacate their residences so that the newly hired laborers could move right in. Even persons with skills moved for employment reasons. Some of the booklets which the Society of Genealogists as well as the Federation of Family History Societies has for sale might help in your searches, even if you are quite experienced. Family history is hard work!!! E.W.Wallace
