Dear Listers, In the 1851 census for Whitstable I have an Edward Rouse Court aged 19 ? who is described as being the son of Ann Goulden. Presumably this would have been either from an earlier marriage or she was unmarried at the time of his birth and this was her maiden name before she married a Goulden. I have tried to locate a marriage for Ann Court to ??? Goulden without any success to date. There is however on the IGI a marriage reported between a Henry Goulding and Anne Court submitted by a member of the LDS dated 1835 in Whitstable I have not been able to locate Edward Rouse Court in the 1861 census and the only other reference I have is from the IGI for an Edward Roust COURT b 1832 Newnham Kent to mother Amy (not Ann) Court. No father given. Edward Roust Court does not appear in any subsequent census after 1851as far as I can tell . I feel that somehow all of these people are connected but cannot put together a paper trail for them all at present possibly due to transcription errors If anyone can shed any light on or are related to these people in any way I would like to hear from you. Thanks for reading this far and thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. Cheers Ian in Hong Kong
Hi Ian The 1851 census return shows Ann Goulden as being still married, although no sign of her husband. There are also two other sons, Henry & Herbert, who are shown on the census as "sons of Henry Goulden". I would guess that the IGI entries are pretty much correct, with the exception of Ann being shown as Amy at the baptism of her illegitimate son. Dear Dave, Thanks for that response. I am inclined to believe that the entry for the IGI record for his birth is a transcription error and that his mother is in fact Ann(e) Court a single parent. I believe that I have now located the father of both Henry and Herbert Goulden hiding in a remote part of sunny Yorkshire working as an Engine Driver from where he never returned to Kent after relocating there sometime in the 1840's until his death in 1886. Thanks again for your feedback.
