I have been trying for a long time to find the first marriage of my g-grandfather, John WOOD of Tenterden. According to the family story, he was married very briefly and only a matter of months and there were no children. He was born in 1845 in TENTERDEN to Thomas & Susan WOOD. He married Jane ? probably in 1868-1870. I have her death certificate which states she was 25 years old, the wife of John Wood, Draper (Master) and died of Dropsy on 17th September, 1870 in TENTERDEN. There is an MI which confirms this: "Jane, wife of John WOOD of TENTERDEN, died 17th September, 1870, aged 25". The excellent Mid-Kent Marriages does not have anything, nor does Freebmd for TENTERDEN and surrounding areas so assume the marriage took place elsewhere. I have tried to check all the Janes marrying a John WOOD, going back several years of which there are over 30. I have also checked all the Janes born in TENTERDEN who would have been 25. One looked good, Jane JAMES, born in Tenterden in 1845 and married a John WOOD in Canterbury in 1868. However, the marriage certificate shows two completely different people. WOOD is such an easy name, but I have also checked Woods and Ward just in case. John then married Ellen OLDBURY in Knighton, Radnorshire where his brother had briefly been a Minister before he died there. If anybody has any suggestions on how I can find this marriage, I would be very grateful. Pauline Anderson Ontario, Canada
