    1. [KENT-ENG] Mystery man and workhouse question.--Joseph CARTER.
    2. Robin Carter
    3. Hello, Listers, Thank you to everyone who replied re my questions on workhouse admissions. Several people asked for more details and what I already knew. Here goes. Joseph Henry CARTER.   possible years of birth. 1874,  1875, 1876 He believed his  birthdate was March 13, 1875 and that he was born in London. THe furthest I have been able to trace him is the 1891 census where he appears  in the Royal Navy , born London, aged 18 years.  We believe he played around with his age to join up because all other documents list him as being born in 1875.   He also stated he was born in London and again his documents show , St. Lukes, Pancras or London .  THe 1911 census , he states he was born in Leicester, age 36.    I have found possible  families in the 1881 census but the details do not fit with later information. Since Joseph said he was an orphan  , is  the Joseph Carter in Spalding workhouse ours?  THe bc for this James does not bear this out.   Short of just continuing to get birth certificates which hopefully will one day be the right one , does anyone have another suggestion?  I have looked at name patterns in the census and his children but not much help here. On his 1902 marriage certificate he says his father was James, a shoemaker , deceased.  Big help!  With names like Joseph, James and Sarah liberally sprinkled through the descendants and the last name of Carter it is a challenge.  I have not had any clues from his naval records from the on line documents of the National Archives. Thanks everyone for reading this far, Robin

    3. In 1891, in Lincolnshire, there is a Joseph Carter age 18, general labourer, born in Spalding, who sounds like the workhouse one: Class: RG12; Piece: 2557; Folio 98; Page 19 What's the reference for the one you found in 1891 ? I can't find him. What is his occupation on the marriage certificate ?
