    1. Re: [KENT-ENG] Occupation Engineer + opinions welcomed (Henry GOULDEN )
    2. My father was apprenticed as an 'engineer' to Doust Marine Engineers, and later worked for Vickers-Armstrong as an 'engineer'.  Today he would be called a 'machinist', using a lathe, milling machine, and other tools to make precision parts to be assembled into wha tever the company made.  The names of various occupations have ch an ged over time. My interest in this comes from the entries I found on two birth certs and one marriage cert for Whitstable  which records that Henry GOULDEN who is named as father has the occupation of Engineer between the years of 1842 and 1867. The only such person I can find in any of the census entries throughout the country is located in an obscure part of North Yorkshire ( Driffield and Goathland) hundreds of miles away from the rest of the family but whose birthplace is always referred to as either Whitstable or Chatham Kent In the census this particular Henry Goulden's occupation is given as Standing Engine Driver, or Engine Driver between 1851 and 1881.This is at best circumstantial evidence but leads me to believe that the estranged husband Henry Goulden in Yorkshire is in fact the father named in the birth certificates in Whitstable. If the occupation on the certs had said Engine Driver instead of Engineer I would have had a stronger case for these references being the same person .
