    1. [KENT-ENG] 1797 death of Frederick George MULCASTER
    2. Hi everyone I'm searching for the death of my ancestor General Frederick George MULCASTER (Royal Engineers) in Kent, where he may have died in 1797. He died 18 August 1797 (as quoted in London Gazette) - I have his Will but no note of his address - so don't know where he was buried or which parish register to look him up in. He was baptised at St James, Westminster, but he did have links with Kent (his daughter Mary became Lady MONTRESOR of Ospringe House nr Faversham, she died in 1861). He could have died in Kent therefore. How could I try to locate his death/burial? I can't even find his death on ancestry or the IGI. Any info very welcome. Regards Catherine in Devon

    3. Catherine, If the will itself gives no clues, the Bank of England will extracts (indexed at Origins.net) usually list a county of residence. In this case the index has Southampton. That may refer to the "county of Southampton" (Hampshire), and not necessarily to the town itself. You could try posting to the Hampshire list. You could also see if someone can check the new edition of the National Burial Index (NBI 3), just in case he has made it onto that? Do be aware though that he may not have been buried close to where he lived and died, as there may have been a family plot elsewhere. 3. There is a death notice for him in the Oracle and Public Advertiser (London, England), Friday, September 1, 1797; Issue 19 715 but unfortunately, no place of death is given "DIED Lately, Frederick George Mulcaster Colonel of Engineers and Major-general in the Army" 17th-18th century Burney Collection Newspapers His eldest daughter Frances died in her 23rd year "perfectly resigned to her fate" on 24th March 1796, again no place was given Oracle and Public Advertiser (London, England), Tuesday, March 29, 1796 He was based in Portsmouth just prior to his retirement in 1796, in command of the Company of Royal Military Artificers and Labourers; there are a few notices of desertions signed by him and other news reports regarding courts martial and the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York.
