Hi Frances many thanks for your help, the only thing that concerns me is Sussex maybe to far but i'm not sure, the genealogist who just checked my wilsons said I was wrong when I put Deptford as a baptism who was born in Charing he seems to think Thomas father of Thomas 1740 would be Cranbrook he's very expensive so I can't do any more with him , but I guess they could have moved with farming best wishes june On Fri, Nov 1, 2013 at 11:22 PM, Frances Lee <frances@mayleecat.com> wrote: > Hi June > > I looked on Ancestry for you! > > They have Thomas Wilson b.1740 Cranbrook, Kent married to Margaret Bourne. > His parents were another Thomas Wilson b. 30/8/1719 East Guildeford, Sussex > d.1770 Peasmarsh. I have found my 5x gt gf in Surrey and one entry states that the parents Christopher and Anne were travelers but parishioners of Chittingstone, Kent. When they wrote that added piece of info they could not have know how crucial it was to future genealogists. I have some hand-written notes from years ago that has Christopher being born abt 1690 in Chittingstone to William and Mary also several siblings but I have no idea where I got that info - I have subs to both ancestry and find my past and have also looked at the IGI but to no avail. I live in Southern Califonia and the LDS did not record the earlier years for this parish so I cannot look there, so please can someone on this list help me with this family. TIA Paul Eggleton

Hi Listers, I've had the pleasure of viewing the Kent workhouse records at the LDS long term temporary library at Kew Records office and access does need an authorised password. Well worth a visit, they hold mainly UK and Ireland films, fill out a small slip and wait 20 minutes and it's free for films held on site. Off site films are £7.50 to order and wait ...... I do have Salt Lake research contact if anyone is interested, I can tell you who it is for free but the service they offer isn't but significantly quicker than ordering and waiting for a film. LDS does offer a free copying option if you can't get to a centre which I did try without success. The Kent records in the Browse area of the Family Search Site can only be accessed through the Family History Centers. A blocking text comes up on the screen to prevent viewing of the image. Brian Sent from Windows Mail From: reenee_tree@yahoo.com Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2013 9:26 AM To: KENT-ENG@rootsweb.com Regarding the microfilmed Kent records that are available through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Anyone can access those records, you do not have to be a member of the church. Go to https://familysearch.org/ and then select "search". From there you can search by name or move further down the page and see what specific records are digitized and browse by location. Some are indexed others are just the raw images. You will see that many of the records are not indexed yet, and anyone can sign up to help with this. Select "volunteer" at the very top of the page. Many people choose to index areas where their ancestors lived in order to speed up the process of indexing the millions of records microfilmed by the church for genealogy and family history research. Many records are not yet digitized. Some are only available on microfilm that can be ordered from Salt Lake City and read at a Family History Center. There is no charge for visiting the center, but there is a fee for ordering the film. It should be noted that there are books available at the main library in Salt Lake City that are not microfilmed yet and can only be accessed by a visit there. To find Family History Center nearest you go to https://familysearch.org/locations/centerlocator There are 4,600 centers in 126 countries. All are available for anyone to use free of charge. You can also donate records to the Family History Library in Salt Lake to have added to the collection. This can be anything, including cemetery headstone inscriptions or a history of your family. The fastest way to do this, is to digitize your records using a scanner, etc, and then send that information on CD to the main library in Salt Lake. They will notify you when the records are online. This is also a good place to archive information for others to view. I can provide further information on this should anyone be interested. Hello Listers, Let me help to clarify the situation with familysearch.org for you. Amongst all my other duties I am also a Family History Consultant at our local centre and have been the British and European Research Specialist there since 1983. Family Search has undergone a massive transformation and is still in the process of many changes - all to do with getting records online. Most importantly, though, is the fact that Family Search is bound by their original and renewing licensing agreements with the various archives, libraries and other record owners such as Canterbury Cathedral Archives. At the time that the Kent records were to go online a new deal had to be negotiated and unfortunately, Family Search was barred by the various archives from permitting the Kent records to be displayed at will on anyone's computer worldwide. Consequently, anyone who wishes to use the Kent records - there are a few that are wide open to the public but not very many - must be logged in at an "authorized" computer terminal. Those authorized terminals are located in the family history centres and in a few major libraries. I know it is a problem for many people who are unable to go to a family history centre or to even get to one of the authorized libraries. The best suggestion that I have is that those who are unable to do so send a friendly letter or email to the various archive offices requesting that the records be opened up for public viewing at will. For instance, Cornwall records are all available to anyone anywhere. Devon, however, is in the same boat as Kent. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Susan D.
