Hi Brian Sarah SILLETT buried 18 May 1808 at St Mary the Virgin, Dover - No age given. Have checked Dover and surrounding villages but no sign of a baptism for Henry SILLETT during that period. However, I might have a clue for you. I have seen other families with children born in both Alburgh (Norfolk) and Dover (Kent), and invariably the head of the household has been employed in the Coastguard service. I don't know if you have pursued this line. There is a guide http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/coastguard.htm All the best Dave Dixon BA (hons) - Economic & Social History - University of Kent - Canterbury 1997 www.fadedgenes.co.uk On 10 November 2013 10:11, Brian Sillett <brian.sillett010@btinternet.com>wrote: > Henry SILLETT consistently records his birthplace as Dover on census > records but I have not traced a baptism record. Henry SILLETT consistently records his birthplace as Dover on census records but I have not traced a baptism record. Some years ago, a kind lady looked at St James, St Mary and St Lawrence records between 1800 –1810 without success. I have found a Sarah SILLETT (sister?) buried 18 May 1808 at Dover but the parish is not given on the Familysearch website. Henry is my 3 x gt grandfather and his 2 siblings born before 1806 and the 8 born after this date were all bapt. in Alburgh, Norfolk so this Kent connection is a bit of a mystery. If anyone can suggest other parishes in and around Dover and has easy access to any of them and could have a look, I would be most appreciative. It goes without saying that I would be pleased to help out SILLETT researchers should there be any interest. Brian Sillett (in Lancashire)

Hi Venita, Times were tough, prisons were crowded, and the new colony needed strong, healthy workers, so it didn't take much to find yourself on a cruise heading south. I had a quick look at the index, and saw there was a William PEACH who was transported for 14 years for stealing handkerchiefs, is this the person you referrred to? His record shows that he had two previous convictions - for stealing fowls he was jailed for one month, and for disorderly conduct he received two months. It looks like the Court ran out of patience when he reoffended by stealing three handkerchiefs from a hedge (it sounds like someone had left their washing out to dry) The whole index is fascinating though, once I started with a few of my own convicts I just couldn't stop as the stories were so interesting. Cheers Trish Nowra NSW. This is a fascinating list! It’s interesting to see the crime and the sentence pronounced for it. One man was sentenced to 14 years for stealing a handkerchief! There must be more to that story… Venita
Hi List, The Index of names of those who gave their birthplace as Kent, and were transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), is available for searching online at the Kent OPC website (many thanks to Susan Young, OPC) - http://kent-opc.org/convictspsym.html Cheers Trish Nowra NSW

Hello Dave Coming up to this important remembrance time of the year, your endeavours a constant reminder of the high price this country paid for waging war. The mess we are now in, if that isn't a testimony to the futility of conflict. Although I served my time in the armed forces, now in later life I am staunchly pacifist. Oh yeah, some will say we must stand up to enemies; fat lot of good that has done us, our enemies now flourish whilst we are sorely diminished as a nation. Born in 1931, I remember the old Britain, still respected, though even then we were on the slippery slope, having lost much of the cream of the country's youth as your excellent researches sadly demonstrate. We think publication of this new article that Mike Paulick and I have been working on will be of interest to readers of this message board. It describes the activities of Pilgrim, Robert Cushman of Kent in Canterbury during the period 1586-1607. It should be of interest to readers who have an interest in this geographic area and period of history, and to any Cushman/Couchman who may descend from this ancestor. Readers can access the article directly at: http://cushmansite.com/genealogy_folder/Robert Cushman in Canterbury 1596 to 1607001.pdf I can e-mai a copy of the Mayflower Quarterly article in .pdf format, upon request. Yes I do agree that you can't just rely on what others have on their trees on Ancestry. However it is a good starting point! From there you hopefully know which village records to access and which years to hopefully lead you forward! I use them as a starting point not as an end! In my own case with my Bogg/Boggs family on my maternal grandmother's side it only seems to be me and a cousin who has done any work on them at all! Everyone just copies from us! Two generations back it is not only church records I'm trying to find but military ones. Both my great grandfather and great great grandfather were in the Royal Artillery. The 19th century ones are fine! They show the names of all the children born both here and abroad and of course there are the censuses. However I have had three searches done on the 18th century records at Kew and they don't list the names of John Boggs children! The most useful piece of information I had from the searches was where he was born in Magherafelt in Ireland in 1757 and through this Kent list I now know where he died, at Dover Castle buried at St. Mary's but I still don't know more than the names of six of his eleven children! All pre censuses and registration! If anyone has any brilliant ideas on how to find them please let me know! What you need to understand is that sometimes a generation or two or one line became dissenters and no matter how hard you look or where you look you will not find a baptism for the child or children so around 1650 you have the civil wars and upset in non clergy looking after parish records which explains lots of missing records prior to the 1680's then in 1680s the dissenters got very active right up to the 1720's when many families rejoined the C of E -----Original Message----- From: kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of June Wilson Sent: Saturday, 2 November 2013 10:31 PM To: kent-eng@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] Cranbrook-Charing -little chart wilsons Hi Frances many thanks for your help, the only thing that concerns me is Sussex maybe to far but i'm not sure, the genealogist who just checked my wilsons said I was wrong when I put Deptford as a baptism who was born in Charing he seems to think Thomas father of Thomas 1740 would be Cranbrook he's very expensive so I can't do any more with him , but I guess they could have moved with farming best wishes june On Fri, Nov 1, 2013 at 11:22 PM, Frances Lee <frances@mayleecat.com> wrote: > Hi June > > I looked on Ancestry for you! > > They have Thomas Wilson b.1740 Cranbrook, Kent married to Margaret Bourne. > His parents were another Thomas Wilson b. 30/8/1719 East Guildeford, Sussex > d.1770 Peasmarsh. > There are half a dozen people on Ancestry with your Wilsons in their tree and > this is the info they have! It is very dangerous to make the (common, but unfortunate) assumption that facts are "proved" because they appear in online trees and that the more trees the same "fact" appears on the more likely it is to be true! Sad to say, there are thousands of subscribers to Ancestry who believe that the right way to build a family tree is to click away on suggested "matches" and attach chunks of lineage without any independent research or checks on sourcing. In next to no time, one person's guesswork spreads like wildfire, with novices assuming that "it must be true because lots of other people have it in their tree". Six trees showing the same information does *not* mean that six people have done proper research and come to the same conclusion. Caroline

Jim Hill, no doubt you have the Dover Beers for the C19th? The ones I know of were in the Kent book trade: do you need information on these Beers: John Henry BEER (1823-1870) and his wife Jane nee BARHAM (1820?-1893), both stationers? They were closely in with the BATCHELLERS, printers and newspaper proprietors. Richard Goulden
Hi June People did stay in one area in some families but in others they moved around a fair bit! There are half a dozen people on Ancestry with your Wilsons in their tree and this is the info they have! Is there a Wilson one name studies group I wonder? Have you checked online? I found one for my Bogg/Boggs family which was very useful! Also check Rootsweb!
