Hello Joan, It might be John Bertha, John and Rose in Uckfield workhouse though John does seem a lot older than Bertha However I have found in the past Workhouse records are not always accurate and inmates often give false information It does seem a coincidence. I do not know if it is the right John in prison in Canterbury in 1901. There are three people on Genes Reunited who have Bertha Welham born 1867 in Ipswich on their tree and one with Rose Sheppey on their tree. . It is worth investigating Yvonne
Hi Joan This may sound a bit unlikely, but have you looked at the 1891 census for Uckfield Workhouse - RG 12 785 Fo: 73 p4? Among the casual paupers, listed consecutively, are Williams John, single, 44, b Isleworth; Baldwin Bertha, married, 25, b Ipswich; Baldwin John, 5, b Canterbury; Baldwin Rose, 1 5/12, b Sheerness. (Surnames listed first in the entry, and I haven't included all the details from the image here.) I appreciate that Bertha & the children have the wrong surname, and the entry could be a complete red herring, but there seemed to me to be enough coincidences here to maybe merit further investigation. Is it possible to find a birth for John William Williams Sr. who may or may not have married Bertha? He would have been born in the early 1860s possibly in Kent. Bertha was born 1866 and very young so he was likely a few years older than she. I will now check ancestry for a John William Williams in a later census living alone or with someone else. Again thanks, Joan Definitely Bertha was born in Ipswich bur living in Chelmsford with her family in 1881. Although she says she is married in 1888, she probably was just living with John Williams but said she was married, People often lied on the census if they were not married, There is no record of a marriage, and she would only have been eighteen in 1888, and possibly only sixteen when she met John Williams, Yvonne -----Original Message----- From: Joan Rooney Sent: Wednesday, November 13, 2013 11:04 PM To: kent-eng@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] John William Williams living in Canterbury1888withwife Bertha Welham and Son John William b 1888 Thanks Yvonne, I understood that Chelmsford is the Civil Parish for Ipswich? Hi Joan As I understand, Jennifer's lookup was for John William Williams' baptism in Canterbury. Although it says he is the son of John and Bertha William, as Bertha appears to have married George Richardson under the name of Welham it does suggest that she was not married to John Williams (or she committed bigamy). They appear to have moved about a bit (I see that their daughter Rose was born in Sheerness according to the 1901 census) so the vicar would not necessarily have known their marital status. I can find no marriage on FreeBMD for Bertha Welham and John Williams. There is a Rose Eliza Williams reg on FreeBMD Sep Qtr. 1890 who might fit the bill but I can't positively identify John William Williams birth registration although there is one reg Dartford district Mar 1888 (not a million miles from Sheerness). I have looked up the Navy Arms in Ivy Lane and the publican from 1874 to 1891 was John Wilson so they were not running the pub. John Williams was possible working there but not at the 1891 census when John Wilson's widow Elizabeth was running it. This would suggest John William Williams and Bertha Welham were married. The wedding has to be after 1881 probably c1885-1888. Is it possible to find a marriage in Kent or Suffolk? Bertha was born Ipswich, Suffolk c1867 and John Williams may be born Kent. I have been unable to find John William b 1888 living with his father John William Williams and mother Bertha (nee Welham), before she remarries. John and Bertha (Welham) Williams married after the 1881 census and don’t seem to appear in 1891. Any help is appreciated. Hi All, I have just joined. I am searching for the birth of John William Williams b 1887-89 in Canterbury. Can anyone help me find this birth? I have found him in 1901 with only his mother who has by then remarried a Geo. Richardson. That is where I learned John’s birth date. Thank you, Trish! I figured it must have been the last straw for the judge to have handed down such a sentence! I haven’t found any relatives on the list, but my gg granduncle, Jesse Pullen, was there to meet them when they arrived in Van Diemens Land. He was a Minister. He and his wife worked with the convicts there. They had gone there from Kent in the 1820s. Remembering my Great Uncle Private Warren Ernest Tilbe, who came to the US, joining his brother Albert in Holyoke, Massachusetts, but returned when the war broke out and joined the army. He was wounded in 1917 but returned to the fighting. He was killed in action 6 August 1918 in France.
In memory of my uncle Leslie Brooks Newsham who died in India 1944 whilst in the Royal Engineers. He was born in Benenden, Kent 1919. His name is on the war memorial in Benenden. He had only been married a few months and was a lovely man! he is much missed! In memory of my great uncle Albert Bogg bborrn Plumstead, Woolwich, Kent who died on 11th November 1918, Armistice Day in Belgium. He was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He had been shot in the lungs two weeks before and died on that day. His wife Winifred had had a baby daughter Joyce in August of that year. He knew about her but had never seen her. In the family we have the last letter than he wrote to Winifred in October in which he apologises for missing her birthday and sends love to 'little Joy'. He too was a lovely man! He too is much missed! Thank you dear Leslie and Albert for what you did for us and Great Britain! We don't forget you!
