    1. [KENT-ENG] RIDLEY
    2. Adele Pentony-Graham
    3. Would love to meet my ancestors of GILLINGHAM.. the Ridley family for Christmas out here in NZ.. but if I have my way this coming year, will visit the grave of my Gt Uncle who died 1916 was with the Canadian Infantry, native of Gillingham. Kent buried Gillingham, but in the old cemetery which is now a playing field, but the CWGC headstone is in the newer cemetery, do I visit both areas! Surely they could have moved the remains to the new Cemetery! I do have the paper work on Willie from Canada and from CWGC site.. seeing it is the 100 anniversary in 2014 of the Great War, feel I must visit his grave..(s) Oddly enough another soldier who died over here in Featherston and from KENT, had two headstones, which meant two graves.. I asked Commonwealth War Graves Commission to work it out, why two headstones. oh dear someone didn't have the common sense to take the incorrect details one away just put the new one elsewhere in the Military Cemetery, don't need brains for some jobs I guess! He was George Prentice. Died WW1. Featherston had a Military Camp. Lt. George Henry Prentice.. single.. from Kent.. his sister was here in NZ as well.. But must get to see where Willie lies.. our Ridley maybe related to Bishop Nicholas Ridley.. say maybe! Merry Christmas folks.. and a lovely 2014, safe one.. Adele Clareville Taphophile.

    1. [KENT-ENG] Bring an ancestor home for Christmas - WATERS/BELTON of Gravesend
    2. Alison
    3. Dear Great-great-great-grandfather Tom and great-great-great-grandmother Fran, Once again I'm extending an invitation for you both to join your Australian descendants at Christmas. It will be a busy time as all of us here have so many questions to ask - Tom where were you born and who were your parents? Fran I just can't seem to find your birth or parents' names anywhere. I know you married in 1808 at Swanscombe - but were you young sweethearts or "of full age"? Tom, did you do an apprenticeship to become a barge/boat builder? Did you follow in your father's occupation perhaps? I've discovered births of your children William (1811) and Belton (1814) and their baptisms at St George in Gravesend, but what of any other children? What about your son Tom, my great-great-grandfather; I can't find his birth/baptism anywhere. Was he possibly baptised in the Wesleyan church? He married in Australia in the late 1850s. I know you worked hard and deserved a holiday every now and then but did you have to go on holidays at the time of the census in 1841/1851/1861? Couldn't you have gone at some other time of the year? Frances I know you were a widow when you died in 1869, but when did Thomas die? Tom, was the Mary WATERS who married William BEADLE at Swanscombe in 1810 your sister or a cousin? How are you related to the William WATERS who married Elizabeth STARBUCK c 1826 and who had several children 1827-1848 baptised at Gravesend ? (one of whom, Robert, later turned up in Australia and possibly helped raise your four orphaned grandchildren (children of Tom junior). Your Australian descendants look forward to sharing Christmas in the sunshine with you. Please come. Alison :-) Sydney Australia PS It could be hot, so please bring a hat - we have plenty of sun block

    3. The parents of Maria BUTLER born somewhere around 1870 Woolwich but not showing on the 1871 census. She was in the metropolitan district school along with brother Charles BUTLER born about 1867 Woolwich. He disappears after he leaves the school. Maria married William Pearson 2nd Aug 1890 in Northfleet Kent. I have been inviting this family to dinner for several years and have almost given up hope of going any further with this line. However I do have one line of enquiry left and that is to look at the admission notes for these 2 children when they entered the school. To do this I will have to return home..... 1. [KENT-ENG] Bringing Home the missing WILLIAMS son
    2. June Vasey
    3. Dear Richard A place has been set at our table for you and your wife Sarah for the past 10 years, but sadly for some reason you are unable to come to my home. Was that because you moved to the USA - is that why you disappeared so suddenly after the 1891 census? Someone told me after my appeal last year that a similar name to yours was on a passenger list but I have been unable to find out more. You are my great great uncle born 26th January 1867 at Friezley near Cranbrook to Charles (agric lab) & Mary WILLIAMS nee BAKER. The last I heard of you was when you and Sarah were living with your parents at Park Cottages Frittenden in 1891. You married between 1885 & 1891 but I cannot find a marriage for you. I believe Sarah was born 1864 in Ticehurst but there were a number of Sarah's born around about that time so have been unable to identify her properly. Your brother James an agric lab. b.1858/63 in Cranbrook married Annie Bourne BURGESS and you have 7 nephews and 4 nieces. I know it gets expensive to buy for family at Christmas but it's a bit dramatic fleeing to the States, if that is what you did. Anyway, for some reason your father Charles ended up in Cranbrook workhouse after his wife Mary, your mother died at Weavers Den Frittenden. Family members tell me he used to walk to Egerton from time to time, a journey of approx 12 miles to see your brother James. I recently found your great grandparents James also an agric lab. b. 1763 Cranbrook & Winifred WILLIAMS nee PARKS b. 1767 at Cranbrook. Winifred died in 1853 Cranbrook at the good age of 86 years. All these family members will be at my house on 25th. I will light the log fire and we will all wait for you both. If you need directions just go to Google maps. June in Edinburgh

    1. [KENT-ENG] Bring Home Walt's kids for Christmas
    2. Katie de Haan
    3. List, It's fairly recent family history, but I may have some Kentish half-brothers or half-sisters I'd like to bring home for Christmas. I'm not mentioning any surnames here, so it should be ok. I finally found my Canadian drifter father's name last year, after a lifetime not knowing who he was. Since I found his family in Canada, I've been trying to reconstruct his life story and find all the children he had along the way. From an orphan and only child, I have now gone to the middle child of 7 or 8 and the counter is still running! To date, I have found three in Canada and five in the UK including me. He had fairly long-term relationships with all our mothers, but these relationships were by no means exclusive, so there could easily be more of his children around. He was in Europe from Christmas Day 1940 throughout the War and until 1953. My father was all over the UK, but spent quite some time in the late 40s and early 50s messing about in a boat on the Thames estuary and beyond. At least one of the children he fathered was registered in Thanet, probably born Margate, in 1950. Since the children were most registered under the mother's name (often her husband's) it is irrelevant to post any names. After all, we don't know who we're looking for. So my question is, if anyone (knows of anyone who) was born in that period of dubious parentage and seriously thinks his or her father might have been a Canadian drifter, do get in touch. If you have reason to believe this really might apply to you, we can compare notes. gallorosso and then the at sign followed by home then dot nl for the Netherlands. ( I'm not too worried about weirdos jumping on our bandwagon, because a simple autosomal DNA test will show whether we're really related. And if any weirdos take the test and are shown to be related, well then, they're OUR weirdos.) J Thank you, and I hope we all find our strays this Christmas, Greetings from Holland Katie de Haan Born London UK 1948 resident in The Netherlands

    3. Bob:I have information that my Martha Weekes was born on February 25, 1826 to Samuel and Jane Weekes. This information was from the East Sussex Records Office. Martha married William Vallentine on July 31, 1848. Martha's father (Samuel) was shown as a labourer, and William was shown as a bricklayer. 3. Hi Norma Have you investigated the marriage of Alice Jane BURROWS, Mar Qtr. 1907 in Poplar district. Poplar covered Bromley. Although Miss Alice Burrows, no age, was listed on the UK Outward Bound Passengers list for the Victorian, May 1907, she was not listed in a corresponding in-coming Canadian Passenger List on Ancestry.com. So off to Archives Canada where the passenger manifest for the Victorian's arrival in Montreal/Quebec on 17 May 1907 is available to read on-line. The ship's manifest, 45 pages, is reasonably legible and on page 43 I found Alice Burrows, adult, returning to Canada and the complete line was crossed out. Looks like Alice did not sail at that time. Her ticket number in both the Outward Bound listing and in the manifest when the ship arrived in Montreal/Quebec was identical. In both lists Alice was sailing in the Saloon class. Our Alice would not have been able to afford that class of travel. And it would be quite a surprise to see her using the title "Miss". Also at that time in 1907 Alice's 2 daughters, half-sisters, were wards of the Barnardo Homes. I imagine Barnardo's would not have been very happy to have Alice sailing off to Canada while they were still responsible for the care of her 2 daughters. But thanks for the suggestion. I would so like to know this grandmother and if anyone can help it would be appreciated.. Mary in hot Sydney.. ps I have searched the Medway records, and all other records on line..

    2. Lesley Miller
    3. Please come and join your family for some Christmas festivities John TESTER and bring with you the details of your own family. I know you were born c 1794 and I assume Herne, Reculver or thereabouts in Kent, but can't be sure. You passed away 15 Feb 1846 Herne Bay and buried 22 Feb 1846 - Reculver. It was very inconvenient that the only census you could have appeared in which would have told me whether or not you were born in Kent, was mostly destroyed in a fire. I cannot find a Christening for you in that area of Kent, so you are my major brick wall. Come and enjoy and lets kick that miserable wall down! Your Gt. Gt. Gt. Granddaughter, Lesley.
