Thanks, Peter, whoops! It seems highly likely this was not a CofE marriage, though it could have been at St Giles, whose registers are not complete in the Ancestry/LMA collection. Either way, your best bet would be to get the marriage certificate from the GRO. Estelle, The Guild of One Name Studies marriage locator service returns the following comment when searched with info supplied by Caroline: "Sorry, we cannot locate the church for this marriage. The entry is located between entries for Kentish Town St Martin and St Pancras, both in RD Pancras." I think Caroline had a small slip of the finger - it should be 1876 not 1976. Hello I am new to this list because after many years of searching I have finally found the final details of my 3x gt grandfather, John Smith of London, "on 11 March 1844, at Dover, John Smith, esq., barrister at law, aged 61" (Kentish Gazette). Being a barrister I would expect that he would have had a will. To this end I have searched on Discovery online and findmypast but I do not have access to ancestry. I tried bringing up the Kent Wills and Probate 1440-1881, Archdeaconry of Canterbury on the familysearch site but only get 'Image not Available' as I am not able to search this at an LDS Centre. I believe Film 0189012 would be the correct film, however I also understand there are films of the indexes so I was hoping they may be printed somewhere. If so, could someone please advise where I may get a lookup of the index to determine whether my John Smith indeed has a will, and whether it would be worthwhile to order a film as I am a long way from the nearest LDS centre. Or, if there is any other way to access these Wills & Probates. Very many thanks in anticipation and best wishes to everyone for 2014. Elizabeth O'Connell New Zealand
Hi Elizabeth, Congratulations on finding his details. A difficult name! The England and Wales National Probate Calendar covers 1858-1966 but unfortunately your death is slightly earlier. Wills prior to 1858 can sometimes be on the British National Archive site. I've done a search and haven't been able to locate anything. If you contact the Society of Genealogists in the UK (http://www.sog.org.uk/) they hold the Ledgers of the Bank of England will abstracts for between 1717 and 1845. They may be able to assist you. Alternatively they may be able to locate further information for you on your 3x great grandfather. Have a great new year. Someone who was "of London" when he died would be unlikely to have his will proved in Kent even though he died there. Also, his will may not have been proved in 1844 and, as a barrister, his occupation could appear in a wills index as gentleman. John Smith is a fiendishly difficult name to research as I know from personal experience. Do you have any more information about him that might help in identifying him - was his wife still living in 1844 and what was her name? Do you know the names of his surviving children, or at least that of his oldest surviving son (if he had one)? Was he a barrister in the City of London and do you know which parish, or was he was he more correctly of one of the Middlesex parishes near London? Answers to any or all of these questions may help in tracking down any will and help in eliminating the many wrong John Smiths. Hi Elizabeth The East Kent Wills Indexes are on the Kent Archaeological Society’s website and cover Canterbury Archdeaconry and Consistory Court wills pre 1858 and you can search either by name or place. Thank you one and all for replying to my note re Fenner & Nye. At the moment I cannot tie any of them in, however, will most definitely keep all the postings in case something turns up down the track. I will also let you know if it does. Happy New Year to all...Lesley
Hello, am trying to find a connection between Elizabeth Nye (b.1789) married to Thomas Delves. Her parents were James Nye and Elizabeth Fenner. This is from my husband's line. Elizabeth Nye Fenner Dyer (b.1803) married to Henry Smither. This is from my line. Both from Tonbridge/Tunbridge Wells. Any help would be wonderful as I feel that there has to be a connection somewhere with the use of both Nye and Fenner in both our lines. I have done quite a bit of research on this and to no avail. Thank you, Lesley.
Hello, There are only two deaths recorded for Stephen Woodcock in Kent up to 1900. (There are three others but are all unnamed, which usually indicates an infant death.) 23-5-1854 age 63. At Ss Cosmus & Damian, Blean. GRO ref; 2A 314. And 4 Q. 1871 age 60. GRO ref; 2A 469. Buried at Ss Peter and Paul, Eythorn. Regards, Dennis Bramble. I had hoped the Smith brothers would identify their parents. Alas, no. Plan B turns to Stephen Woodcock because his children were brought to Canada to live with Smiths who had a mystery relation to my Smith brothers. James was my gggrandfather born about 1827 in Kent. _Stephen Wooccock_ Born: 1811 to Martha Smith and William Woodcock in Wye. Death: Unknown. Possibly Ware or Blean. Married Charlotte Stevens, Feb. 1834 in Wye Children: Martha Sarah Woodcock, 1834, married Francis Johnson in Canada William Stevens Woodcock,1836, married Mary Grace Sloman in Canada Elizabeth Ann Woodcock, 1838, married James Oliver in Kent. Charlotte died in 1838 after the birth of Elizabeth. The children lived with Charlotte's parents in Crundale until 1848 when Martha and William were taken somehow to Mitchell, Perth Co, Ontario Canada to live with one John Smith and his wife Sarah Sanford of Sussex. They took the Smith name but not legally as seems to be common then. I have tons of info on Wm. Woodcock's other children as I have followed their lives in England and the immigration of two daughters to Perth in their later years. I also have the ancestry of Martha Smith and her burial in Wye. But, cannot connect the Smiths. So, I think it would be a sterling idea to get Stephen Woodcock to dinner. He disappeared after his wife's death and he has a lot of explaining to do. Hello Lesley, This information re. FENNER may be of interest or may be not. Justin case, I have found Fenner in my research on BRAMBLE. It was most interest to me as I was at school with Olive Fenner at Cobham, Kent. Then in my research I discovered the family were at one time in the Hoo Peninsular which is where I was born. In looking further I discovered the name in the Tonbridge R.D. I did not look for any connection. Regards, Dennis Bramble. Don't know if this person is linked to your family but I have an Ellen Elizabeth NYE (born 1896 Tonbridge) married to my 2nd cousin twice removed, Frederick Fenner b 1895 Southborough. I don't know who Ellen's parents were but Frederick FENNER was the son of Henry Phillip FENNER b1855 Underriver & Mary CARPENTER b 1859 Tonbridge. Henry's parents were Jesse FENNER b 1820 Burwash and Elizabeth RANGER 1820 Underriver.
