    1. [KENT-ENG] Elizabeth Turk Friend
    2. Philippa Cooper
    3. My 2nd ggmother Elizabeth Turk Friend was the illegitimate daughter of Ann Friend, of Peasmarsh, Sussex. When she bore my ggrandfather, Frederick Friend, on 2/10/1629. she named his father as John Friend. She had Frederick in Paddington, London. This leads me to believe she went away to have the baby or perhaps she was working there. Either way, this is a huge brick wall for me, not to be able to go back any further. I am addressing this to the Kent list since I know there are lots of Friends in Kent, but I have a feeling there is a need to go back to the Turk family, that of Elizabeths "father" as well. In other words it's a mess. Can anyone help me?' Cheers Philippa in Adelaide, South Australia

    3. Hello Graham, Thank you so much for taking the time to find the will info. That is indeed him. I have no idea why I said he died in November. I have his death certificate as George Bolton Bolton, died 22 February at 8 Old Ford Road, Bow. His brother Beresford's, four children and two nephews left London for Canada in June of 1869 under the name of Henry Dunn. Beresford and William came somehow. One perhaps as Henry Dunn and or later in 1869 or 70. Sister Charlotte Bolton came somewhere in their and I get them all mixed up since it is very convoluted. Charlotte married Wm. Dunn in 1870, the witnesses being Beresford St. Clair Bolton and Wm. Bolton. Then they changed their names to Robert B. Palmer and Wm. Bolton Palmer. It is even more twisted but impossible to explain concisely. So, thanks to your jump start I am reviewing records and will investigate Ancestry again and try to sort out their moves. 3. Thank you Yvonne. This information is all of a great help to me, as this is a new branch of the family that I have just discovered. I had begun to think that any English branch of the ABSOLON family had died out because of being all girls remaining in England; they bore girls and quite a few never married. This branch bears the SMITH name, which is always difficult. The 3 surviving males of the ABSOLON branch of Eleanor's mother's family, one of which from whom I am descended, emigrated to Australia. 3. Hello, I am looking for some help to find the marriage of Eleanor SMITH (mother Eliza Amelia ABSOLON & Thomas W SMITH). She apparently married Napoleon NOEL who was born in Paris, France, and was in the Admiralty. I can find the death and probate of both in 1932, as they died only months apart - she on 17 October 1931 and he in March 1932. Eleanor was born in Clerkenwell on 19 Nov 1858 and baptised in the City Road Congregational Chapel on 10 April 1859. She apparently died in Kent, so I thought I would ask this list to help point me in the right direction, if at all possible. Eleanor was my grandfather's cousin. All the best for the coming year & thank you in advance for any help. Estelle

    3. Apologies if this comes through twice. For some reason Kent list came through on my 'Outlook' folder even though I was subscribed on my 'hotmail' address which causes problems when I try to reply. I have since re-subscribed with a BT email address. On the contrary. A barrister is highly likely to have his will proved by the highest authority in the land. Which at that time that was the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. -----Original Message----- Someone who was "of London" when he died would be unlikely to have his will proved in Kent even though he died there. Also, his will may not have been proved in 1844 and, as a barrister, his occupation could appear in a wills index as gentleman. ssage

    3. I wasn't including the PCC as one of the Kent courts - the OP was asking about Archdeaconry of Canterbury wills etc. Although PCC stands for Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the Canterbury reference is to the Province of Canterbury which extends well beyond Kent to include over half of England (as opposed to the diocese, archdeaconry and city of Canterbury which are all contained within Kent). And much of the business involved with proving wills at the PCC was transacted in London, not in Canterbury. Pauline On 31/12/2013 13:01, David Pott wrote: > On the contrary. 3. Hi Estelle Yes. The marriage certificate should give her father's name and occupation. I say "should" because occasionally one just sees "deceased" under the father's details if he was dead at the time of the marriage (or if it was convenient to say he was), although, in theory, these details should be there, regardless of whether he was dead or alive. If you are going to buy the certificate, make sure you do so direct from the GRO (www.gro.gov.uk). The statutory fee is £9.25 including worldwide postage. Third parties will charge you well over the odds and take longer to get the certificate to you. 3. Thank you Libby, I had not found that website on my searches. The John Maud does not feel right even with the correct date, as I have not come across that name so far. If however it is not out of your way, it would be great if you could check for me. Clearly there is no rush as this John Smith has been lying quietly for a long time! Thank you so much again Elizabeth On 31/12/2013, at 12:34 AM, Libby Richardson <libellenrichardson@gmail.com> wrote: > Hi Elizabeth > > The East Kent Wills Indexes are on the Kent Archaeological Society’s website and cover Canterbury Archdeaconry and Consistory Court wills pre 1858 and you can search either by name or place. The quickest way to locate the indexes is to search for East Kent Wills Indexes. I did look but could only find a reference to a John Maud Smith of Canterbury who made a will in 1844 which was probated in 1846. The images and the originals of the wills are held at the Kent History and Library Centre at Maidstone. If you want I could have a look at the will the next time I am in there. > > Best wishes > > Libby > West Malling > Kent UK > > On 30 Dec 2013, at 10:02, Cathryn Warren <cathryn@uandidirect.com.au> wrote: > >> Hi Elizabeth, >> >> Congratulations on finding his details. 3. Thank you so much Cathryn. I hadn't thought about the SOG so I will give them a look. All the best for your own research in 2014. Many thanks again Eliz.
