Many thanks to Maureen, Lozzie, Judy and anyone I may have forgotten, whilst I wasn't able to get the exact house, I learnt a lot about Lee, even a book on it's history is available to be read on the net. My husband's grandmother went on to marry a man who had a produce business in Lee, perhaps I may investigate the business at a later time. Beryl in Australia.

Thanks to all who replied to my email requesting help in finding the marriage of James Tingley of Worth to Ann ? of Wrotham. In the 1851 census Ann is a widow living with one of her sons in Worth, Sussex age 75. Her place of birth is given as Wrotham Kent. I am unable to find a marriage locally and think it likely she could have been married in her local church before moving to Sussex. If anybody has access to Wrotham area parish registers and could look up a marriage circa 1797 when their first child was christened in Worth, I would be very grateful. Your help will be much appreciated. Thank you. Helen No virus found in this outgoing message. Many thanks to all those who replied to my query about FTM2010. I think I shall sit tight and soldier on with V10 - it seems to do all those things I want to do and there appears no point in making my life more difficult just for the sake of it. The extended Amazon reviews (I never thought of looking there) were particularly enlightening - thanks Therese. Again, the list comes up trumps! Regards, Bob in a damp & cold Spain
Judging by the "mixed" customer reviews of the various versions on Amazon, I suspect the answer is "no": http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B002MCYVLS/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B002MCYVMW/ref=cm_cr_pr_link_next_2?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&pageNumber=2&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B002TKLK9O/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_summary?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending Doesn't sound promising! Churchill before and while he was First Lord of Admirality. I also suggest Googling or researching A J Balfour for more history. Balfour was prominent during this period as world events led the way to WWI and later to WWII, which some historians now consider to be one war. Regards, Steade

Does anyone live near or can look at an address for me. My husband's grandmother was a " live in servant" at 55 Bevant Ash Road, Lee, Kent before her marriage in 1894. I'd like to know if the road is still there, and is there a house at no. 55, if so does it appear to be a house of 115 years old. If it appears to be of that vintage, I would appreciate a photograph, with many thanks. Beryl in Australia
Beryl, The address will probably be Burnt Ash Road (now London SE12), and the street is still there. You'll find it on Google Maps. Using Street View (pull down the orange man), it seems that there is new housing on the odd-numbered side of the road at the relevant point. However, the numbering may have changed since 1894. The LCC's published "List of the Streets and Places ... London 1929" shows no renumbering of Burnt Ash Road up to 1929, but there may have been some later. For further information you should check with Lewisham Local Studies, who also have many old photographs. http://tinyurl.com/b6klbt Meanwhile, there is a range of photos of old Lee on the Ideal Homes site. http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/lewisham/main/images-lee.htm HTH Judy London, UK -----Original Message----- From: kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of George Whatson Does anyone live near or can look at an address for me. 55 Burnt Ash Road is no more - the big old houses on that side of the road were replaced in the 60s/70s with some rows of terraced houses. However, if you go to Street View in Google maps and find Burnt Ash Road, turn 180 degrees about face and you will see the kind of houses that were there as the other side of the road is still intact. It is such a shame as Lee had some fine large all houses that are gradually being lost. Best regards Lozzie

Hi there is a possible for james BOWERS aged 18 (1873) born Erith kent which is only 6.9 miles from Blackheath and a little more to Lewisham He is a gunner in the Woolwich arsenal District Royal Artillery Barracks, at the time of the 1891 census. Might be worth following him up. 2. there are numerous trees on ancestry and they give James as being born 15 essex place, Lewisham to Robert Bowers and "Donna" Maria Gardner and marrying Louisa Tillett.....might pay to contact these people - they are public trees. the tree also shows his birth certificate. Hi Gary, You want http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl There are also pay to view sites such as www.ancestry.co.uk and findmypast On free bmd you can put in two surnames (one for hubby and one for wife) to see if there are marriages. Birth registrations after 1911 I believe, also give the mothers maiden name. Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia > Hi List > > I am very rusty on searching due to health , in the past,on a bmd search > for a marriage could, select one partner , then from the details given > find the possibile maiden name of his wife, where and how can i do that > now. > > Gary Hodge
Lets throw in "The Genealogist" as another site which holds all of the GRO BMD indexes in microfilm. Searching the records can be a touch lengthy and possible costly if to open up all of the pages on offer. Let's explain. If you wish to search for someone in a range of years you will be given all of the quarterly indexes for the surname for the period - you need to look at each index in turn till you find your target. Your are conducting the same type of search as you would in a record office, leafing through the microfilms of the registers. Ancestry is a better site for searching the records, but you need to subscribe, and you need to double check some of the transcriptions, many of which are wrong (for example Mernandez for Hernandez) If you cannot find someone using a straightforward surname search, then try wild card searches (Put in the statrt of the name 3 or 4 letters and* or the last 3 or 4 letters and*) Lastly, my preference is FreeBMD Google them - you don't need to use Ancestry to find the site. Sister sites to FreeBMD are FreeCEN and FreeReg The site is free, which I believe we all like. :-) Richard Brown Bromley, Kent U.K. ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 24 Jan 2010 16:27:46 +0000 From: Charani <charani.b@googlemail.com> Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] bmd sites To: gary hodge <jhdl10848@blueyonder.co.uk> gary hodge wrote: Hi List I am very rusty on searching due to health , in the past,on a bmd search for a marriage could, select one partner , then from the details given find the possibile maiden name of his wife, where and how can i do that now. Nick, I guess you tried Burkes Peerage - probably nothing will be there about the bastardy. Also, the Times on-line is a good site to search. The house in Westerham is most likely Quebec House which is owned by the National Trust. General Wolfe was the most famous inhabitant. I met the manager of the house about 4 years ago and he was telling me that the NT was marketing Quebec House for the wrong reasons. The house itself has a fascinating history and is architecturally interesting - more so than the general! Now, if you check out the "Images of England" website on a slow Sunday you will find the listed description of Quebec House and Churchill's home Chartwell. You will also find my name attached to one or two of the photographs! :-) Cheers Richard Brown Bromley, Kent U.K. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Sun, 24 Jan 2010 07:58:50 -0800 From: "Nick Wilson" <nickwilson@shaw.ca> Subject: [KENT-ENG] CHURCHILL of Westerham, Kent To: <KENT-ENG@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <91FED5810B544011B617AF20B9A04BFB@OwnerPC> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello, It gets pretty quiet here on a Sunday morning so I spent some time googling the name of my only titled relative, a great aunt, and came up with some interesting facts. I discovered for the first time her mother had been the mistress of George Charles, who later inherited his father's title as the 8th Duke of Marlborough, and whose nephew in later years was to buy a house in Westerham, Kent. His uncle, the Duke in waiting, sired a bastard son in 1881 in Paris, who then became an unwelcome and embarrassing half brother of my great aunt. This was a very well kept secret when I was growing up seventy years ago At best, this is a half relationship and came to me through my great aunt's marriage to one of my maternal grandfather's older brothers, but can anyone tell me what relation, if any I am to WLSC? Thanks, Nick
Hi Pam, thank you so much for your reply. I have seen the James born Erith but have discounted him as he appears in the 1901 in Erith when my James is in Moelesy, Surrey. Unfortunately the information on Ancetry comes from my tree :-) I posted his Birth Certificate. along with his Marriage Certificate. I should really have mentioned that I have James' basic information, I was really tring to find James and his father in case there were any other offspring etc. I really appreciate your efforts.
