    3. Yes of course, and divorce was very expensive. Bigamy (if caught) resulted in being sent to Oz as a convict in some cases. So they would wait until one party died possibly. I forgot that, and have one in my tree. I have one on my tree that married after all the children in his second relationship were born. His first wife died which enabled him to eventually marry. Regards Kevin Wilson

    3. Hi Don, The marriage would undoubtedly be enlightening. I wonder if she was actually Nathaniels brothers widow. I read on one of this lists, at some points in history it has been frowned upon to marry ones brothers widow. And again this does show, as you say, that information depends upon what questions are asked at the time doesn't it? The marriage should tell though. Are they PR's available to peruse at a local LDS?? There might have been a change in vicar between 1801 and 1804, which might account for the difference too. Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia > Hi, > I have found :- > Thomas, son of Nathaniel Rudd and his wife Rebecca late Rudd (widow) 3rd > May 1801, > followed by :- > William, son of Nathaniel Rudd and his wife Rebecca late Block > (Spinster) 1st January 1804. >

    3. I did post a couple of weeks ago about the puzzle of my uncle's birth mother . I thought you might like a quick update As you might remember I was looking for an Edith Olive COLEMAN otherwise known as Edith Olive QUESTED born according to her death cert in Marylebone 1895 The informant on the death cert was L G MABEY son in law, so I found his birth (14.02.1926) and his mother was also a QUESTED, so sent for his birth cert hoping that his mother would lead us to our Edith Lawerence George MABEYS mother was Amelia Charlotte QUESTED and his father is down as George MABEY ( can't find their marriage) So I went straight to 1901 and found Amelia with her brother and her parents Amelia & Frederick QUESTED and living with them at the time was a 5 year old girl called Edith COLMAN with place of birth unknown, I have been unable to find the family so far on 1911 but its early days yet, but it least its solved the reason she used Coleman and Quested as a surname Karen Peterborough

    2. pam hillier
    3. Hi Peter, Seems that your question has a possible answer from Richard. But if I may add something here. 1. The registrar takes down what they are told, therefore this does present a few scenarios, which can be dependant on what questions are asked and what information is proffered. One you touched upon yourself, a possible widow, but not divulged at the time of registration. 2. One of my families registered the births of their children with maiden name on the birth registrations. We could not find a matching marriage entry for the time frame, BUT there was one in a time frame which made the children almost adults, the eldest was 20 in fact. On getting this marriage certificate it was indeed our couple. Obviously they did not marry, had children, registered the births, so why marry later? There could be many reasons on thinking about it. Marriage for inheritance purposes, hubby was in the army so, timing might have been convenient, necessity due to a late baptism or a marriage of one of the children or that they were no longer bearing children so could marry without as much stigma attached ......we will never know probably. But there it was. 3. Hi, On a similar note, I have been looking at the parish records for Norfolk, which are now online at Familysearch.org. For baptisms for the period I am looking at, the officiating minister puts down not only the parents, but the mother's maiden name and status at marriage - very useful... I have found :- Thomas, son of Nathaniel Rudd and his wife Rebecca late Rudd (widow) 3rd May 1801, followed by :- William, son of Nathaniel Rudd and his wife Rebecca late Block (Spinster) 1st January 1804. I appreciate that the Rudd's are as common in Norfolk as Smith's anywhere else, but this is a very small parish, no more that half a dozens baptisms each year, so I do feel they are the same family. Now, I mention this to show that it is not only registrars that get told mixed information. Don Farnham. 3. A connection to Jane Macmanus' BUTLERS ? My family ( CHAPMAN ) married into the BUTLER family 25 Aug 1754 . SUSANNA BUTLER (b.16 Apr 1727, Wychling) married JAMES CHAPMAN (blacksmith , Lenham 3 Nov 1728-11Mar 1802). SUSANNA's father was ROBERT BUTLER (3 Feb 1697 Wychling - 28 Jan 1772 ). ROBERT's father was Henry ( Wychling 1646-1694). Wychling is very near to Lenham , so there could well be connections to your BUTLERS.

    1. [KENT-ENG] Maiden Names
    2. Peter Jones
    3. Hi Everyone. This afternoon I posted a question on this Kent mailing list about the derivation of a "Maiden Name" on the FreeBMD birth registrations. Within the next two hours I not only received plenty of good advice from all around the world but, despite only giving some scant background information, I was also given the names of the parents who I had been struggling to find all day. My thanks and appreciations to all those who responded to my request and in particular to Richard in the Cayman Islands who has opened another door for my one-name worldwide study of the Trus(s)lers. I have written to you separately but I thought I should let the rest of the list know about the help you have all given me. Today's emails have shown me what worldwide really means. Best wishes Peter Jones

    3. Hi Everybody Notwithstanding that people do make mistakes I am just wondering how accurate mother's should be when they state what their Maiden name is? After, I think it was, 1910 the Birth entries on FreeBMD show the Mother's Maiden name but I just can't seem to find anyone with the Maiden name of HAYES marrying a Mr Trus(s)ler except for one lady in Lancashire and, although this is exactly where I want the marriage to take place, the timing is way, way out! Eg, I have found 4 children with birth registration dates of 1939, 1942 (Twins) and 1946 in Lancaster. In each case the Maiden name of the mother is shown as Hayes. But, the only Hayes / Trus(s)ler marriage I can find is in 1914. The gap between 1914 and 1939 (with no apparent children in between) strikes me as being overlong, so I seriously doubt that I have the right parents. My question is therefore 'what is the correct position here. Am I looking for a Ms Hayes who married a Mr Trus(s)ler or am I looking for a Ms Hayes who married a (say) Mr Smith and then married a Mr Trus(s)ler? Regards Peter

    3. Hi Peter, You don't tell us the forenames of the TRUSSLER and HAYES who you are looking for, or whether the children registered in Lancaster are positive matches within your research, but there was a marriage of William TRUSSLER to Alice HAYES registered in the Sept Qtr of 1940 at Lancaster Vol 8e, Page 2530. In addition to the births quoted in your message, there was also a Glennis TRUSSLER, mother maiden name HAYES, born in the Sept Qtr of 1940 and registered at Lancaster Vol 8e, Page 1538. 3. You may be able to use Geoff's Search Engine (just Google those words!) to look for Canterbury and the date. No promises, as I've only used it for villages and WW1 casualties, but it uses a different search protocol on the CWGC records and if it works is very, very useful. Adrian

Are you looking for a general list of all those in Canterbury who died or one specific person/family? If the latter, try the CWGC site (www.cwgc.org/) which lists civilian casualties. I have a vague recollection there was a way to find all those in a particular place/regiment who died. The discussion was on GenBrit. You may be able to find it via that list's archives. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
