Hi everyone, I'm new to this list and wonder if anybody can assist with my query. We have an August 1897 marriage certificate of Sarah Ann Wall (widow, nee McGilloway) marrying Joseph Richmond (36, father william deceased farm labourer) at register office Hollingbourne. Residence for Joseph (a domstic coachman) is Wichling Rectory and for Sarah Ann is just Wichling. What we are looking for is was Joseph emploed by the Rector, if so how long? Did his family come from the Kent area? what was Sarah Ann doing in Wichling as her marriage to L A Wall had been in Winchester. We know that by 1898 they had moved to Leicestershire and subsequetnly had three sons, Did the Rector move at the same period? Are there any records for Wichling on line for this period. Lots of questions I know but if one doesn't ask one doesn't get. Thanks for your time in reading this request. peter elliott

Hi Bryan, Not a lot of the 1831 exists, just small pockets from what I am aware. I read on a list at some point that the 1831 only states the head of the household and the numbers. It was just for the purpose of statistics. As such once the statistics were finalised many were destroyed. Some were available at some point on familyhistory online, which I "believe" was taken over by findmypast....if I recall correctly. Either way it's not an awful lot of help. Someone will correct me if I am recalling this incorrectly. Cheers pam from adelaide Australia Firstly, does anyone have an interest in either John PAGE or Ansley HARMER (HARTFIELD) who got married at Tonbridge, Kent near the end of 1865 (GRO Tunbridge 2a 879), please? Or does anyone have an interest in a Solomon DINNAGE (or deriviation) born about 1848 at Heathfield, Sussex?

Firstly, does anyone have an interest in either John PAGE or Ansley HARMER (HARTFIELD) who got married at Tonbridge, Kent near the end of 1865 (GRO Tunbridge 2a 879), please? Or does anyone have an interest in a Solomon DINNAGE (or deriviation) born about 1848 at Heathfield, Sussex? Ansley was born as Anslie HARTFIELD in 1846 at Ticehurst, Sussex out of wed-lock (just over the border from Kent) and assumed the surname of HARMER when her mother and her children (including Ansley) went to live with Jospeh HARMER She got married to John PAGE in the name of HARMER. The marriage does not appear to have lasted very long because in the 1871 Census, Ansley is living at Burwash, Sussex with her deceased mother's husband Joseph HARMER. She is shown aged 25 as Joseph's (aged 57) wife (but I think this must be wrong and the enumerator may have got confused!) and her siblings, all of whom were born out of wedlock before her mother married Joseph. Also living with them was a boarder, Solomon DINIGE (correct name DINNAGE) aged 32, born Heathfield, Sussex, who Ansley set up home with at Eastbourne, Sussex by the 1881 Census. They lived together at Eastbourne until Ansley died in 1911. They got married at Hastings, Sussex in 1898 when Ansley used the surname HARMER. There is a reference to a John PAGE in the book `Victoria Village - The Diaries of the Reverand John Coker Egerton of Burwash 1857-1888´ edited by Roger Wells ((ISBN 0 7509 0287). On page 208 under the date 29 June 1878 is the following entry: "In evening, Mr TAYLOR called on me with a request from a poor man of ye name TRIBE who years [ago] lived in ye parish that I would inform him how to get a divorce as I knew all about his wife. All I could do was to recommend him to apply to a man of the name of John PAGE who had latterly got a divorce from a very bad wife." This John PAGE appears to be the same one who married Ansley HARMER at Tonbridge because a search of the National Archives web-site reveals a Divorce Court File: 3847. Appellant: John PAGE. Respondent: Ansley PAGE. Co-respondent: [...] DINEAGE. Type: Husband's petition for divorce [hd]. Covering dates 1875. It appears Ansley formed a relationship with Solomon DINNAGE while still married to John PAGE, and John cited Solomon as co-respondent in his petition for divorce against Ansley. As some of my PAGE ancestors come from Burwash, I am trying to find out if John PAGE is one of them. Why he and Ansley got married in Tonbridge is a bit of a mystery as Ansley was born at Burwash, Sussex and in the 1861 Census she was employed as a live-in servant at Eastbourne, Sussex. Perhaps John PAGE came from Tonbridge? I have ordered a copy of the Marriage Certificate and perhaps this will give some clues. Does anyone have access to the Baptisms Register for Tonbridge, Kent or Burwash, Sussex who can tell me if they had any children between 1865 and 1871, please? Sorry this has become rather complicated but thanks for any help and/or suggestions? Chris Page
I am trying to find the link between two women Elizabeth Percy (nee Reddecliffe) and Ann Reddecliffe (nee Sprague) Ann Sprague marries a James Reddecliffe in Devon (1806) and subsequently dies when staying with Elizabeth and her family in Sheerness in 1862 Elizabeth's husband registers Ann's death but no relationship is stated on the certificate Elizabeth Reddecliffe says birth is c 1809 and she is fairly consistent with this year and she is from Stoke Damerel/ Devonport in Devon, according to the censuses Elizabeth marries William Percey (also Percy) in Stoke Damerel in 1833 and she dies in Sheerness in 1866 as far as I can discover William and Elizabeth Percey have the following children a William Henry in 1834 in Tavistock a Thomas Reddecliffe in 1838 in Tavistock a George T in 1840 in Sheerness I feel that Elizabeth is likely to be a fairly close relative of Ann but have not been able to discover any direct connection there is an Elizabeth Reddecliffe bapt in 1804 but I think that this is too early unfortunately the Stoke Damerel registers are not generally available for this period of time I would appreciate any help with this thank you Jean Wilby

The deceased officer had very recently returned from New South Wales, of which colony and its dependencies he had been Governor-in-Chief during the last nine years. >From Times ( London, England ), Saturday, October 6, 1798; Issue 4301. On Tuesday night, about nine o'clock, as Mr. BASSETT, of Beckenham, Kent, was returning home in a chaise, accompanied by his wife and another person, they were stopped near Stroud Green, Croydon, by two highwaymen, who robbed them of about 2 pounds in cash, a mourning ring, and some other articles.
Let's do something about it then, shall we?? I'm still looking for any sign of my gg grandad, Stephen Dorman. According to his death cert he died 1875, at Dunedin, New Zealand at 74 years old so that makes him born 1801ish in Canterbury, England. Parents Stephen Dorman & Chartlotte. He married first to Charlotte Poulton 1822, All Souls Paddington & they had a daughter Charlotte Matilda in 1827 in London. There is a death for mum Charlotte 7Mar1828 St James, Marylebone. Then Stephen married Mary Ann Whitelock nee Waters in 1829 at St Marylebone . I have all their details & kids. The family came to Aus around 1850. I have 1841 census for all the family at St George, Hanover Square where the boys were born. Anything for Stephen from Kent would be fantastic. Thank you. Cheers.
