    1. [KENT-ENG] Johanna and William COOK of Love Lane Milton near Sittingbourne
    2. Beth
    3. Doe anyone have this couple on their tree, or provide any further clues as to their whereabouts prior to, or after the 1861 census? Johanna COOK is listed as having been born in c1833 in Frinsbury, Kent, but it may be a mis-spelling of Frindsbury. William J COOK is listed as a Mariner, born in Clapham, Surrey c1831. The couple were living in Love Lane, Milton near Sittingbourne which was near Kings Mill. I haven't been able to find a marriage on freebmd and have considered that perhaps there hadn't been one. I have also considered that COOK may in actual fact be COCK, but again haven't found a marriage. I have a missing branch on my tree and this couple may hold the key to a mystery. I have no experience with tracing mariners ... it's looking like a giant black hole at the moment!!!!!!! Many thanks Beth

If the incumbent wasn't aware the couple were unmarried, the children wouldn't have been shown in the baptismal register as base born. That would only happen if he knew. > I'm trying to locate a marriage and hope to narrow the search. Sorry, I haven't narrowed the search for you. The couple may have married in another parish other than the one in which they were normally resident for some reason: work, under age, parental disapproval, within the forbidden degrees. If you were to name the family in question and give full details of who the children were, when they were baptised and where, someone may be able to help you find them. 3. Robyn, before you splash out on FMP credits or a subscription, I suggest you read the notes regarding the gradual release of this database on FMP. The current batch does not cover the possible date of your veteran who it seems retired with an army pension by the time of the 1851 census. The dates ranges shown refer to when the pension was granted and not when he possibly died. So if he was born in 1785, possibly joined up around aged 18 and served the 12 years to receive a pension you should be looking for the period of around 1815-1820 give or take a few years. Date range Approx no. of Approx no. Attestation papers to serve in the Royal Marines at Chatham 1839 (when aged 21). Discharged 1859 as Length of service. I have obtained this document from Kew and place of birth is 'America, Nova Scotia' so a bit of a quandry to start with as I *thought* NS was Canada. I have looked at all I can on my UK sub to Ancestry but this does not extend to the Canadian databases. (Particularly the tantalising 5 entries on the Canadian Genealogy Index!!) Please does anyone know of any free web sources I can try as I cannot really afford to go global on Ancestry right now. Of particular interest are Canadian Passenger lists, parish register, military lists of personnel in Nova Scotia c.1817-1820 or any census type info. I know he was back in Rochester, Kent, UK in 1849 for his marriage to Eleanor Goodchild although I have never found him on any census. His wife and children are always on their own. His parents William Thistleton and Ann married in Rochester, Kent 1813 William Turner Thistleton was born c.1818 = supposed Nova Scotia Siblings baptised in Chatham 1818 and 1823 and Knaresborough, 1831 & 1837. 1841 census NOT with his parents and siblings in Knaresborough, Yorks. The top Nanny training college was the Norland College - their website has a history page and may have lists of enrolled students. http://www.norland.co.uk/home-120.html But I suspect it was also possible to do the job as an unqualified person, so you may have no luck. -- Anne ---- Heather Horseman <HeatherMT@bigpond.com> wrote: > Does anyone know if there were registers kept of nannies in about 1919? > >
