I stay in Queenstown, South Africa and really battle to find information about our ancestors in England. I have a Henry Heath, Esq. of Orme House, Northfleet born about 1769, England and died 28 Aug 1843, Northfleet Kent. He was buried at St Botolph's Church, Northfleet. I found an inscription for my Henry on the church's website. I wrote to the email adress on the website several times regarding the possibilty of a photo of this inscription and/or grave. Sadly no reply yet. I was hoping that there might be someone on this list who would be able to get hold of such a photo. I could only find one child for Henry x Unknown, John Henry Heath. John Henry was born in 1792 and baptised in 1799. On his baptism inscription it only shows his mother as deceased, no name. I could find no other wife or child for Henry either. 3. Hello Sid Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I have managed to find him on the findmypast 1911 website. You were absolutely right that he was in Singapore. I had assumed that as the 2nd Batt were called back from India to go to France in 1915 he was there in 1911. Of course after being my own family historian for nearly 10 years I would have known better than to make assumptions! Have just ordered Ray Westlakes book and am looking forward to reading it as I have other soldiers in my tree of various regiments. June

    3. Hello List Is there anyone who could positively confirm for me if there is a George Wood listed on the memorial? A descendant insists he was killed when the HMS Cressy was torpedoed on 22 Sep 1914, but I cannot find him on any crew lists, or the CWGC site. The descendant insists he is on the memorial, but he is not on the transcriptions I can find. Many thanks Sharee in NZ

    3. Hello June, Ray Westlake's "English and Welsh Infantry Regiments" puts the 1st Btn "The Buffs" in Ireland 1910-1914 and the 2nd Btn in Singapore 1910, then to India in 1913. The 2nd were brought back to England in 1914 before crossing to France in January 1915. He could of course be wrong, though he is a reputable military historian, or there could have been detachments of the 2nd Btn sent to India in the year you mention. The following link to pages on the "The Buffs" website does seem to confirm Singapore as their 1911 posting. You have to scroll down to find the reference to the postings of both regular battalions and of the militia battalion. It is tucked away ! http://www.kentfallen.com/PDF%20REPORTS/1911%20ARMY%20LIST.pdf If you have his name and particularly his army number you may be able to find out a lot about him in his service record at the NA, but you may have to visit. Dear Kent-Eng list members, I posted a thank you some days ago, but have not seen it displayed so: A very big thank you to John in Deal, Kent, Sue Slater and Pam Beer for your replies to my request for information about 'our' Richard. You have not only provided the wrecking ball to demolish a brick wall, but the information you have sent has linked Richard's family with our THORNCRAFT family in Australia. I am very grateful for your input. I hope I can return the favour some day. Regards, Leigh.

    3. Hi June, I just put in the name, where born and found both in the military, one in India, one in Transvaal, South Africa. It all seems to fit but I know it needs to be backed up with other paper proof. I've not yet tackled that part. 3. I am trying to find the location of the birth of my ancestor John Tomlin/Tomlyn. I believe he was born circa 1773/5 in East Malling Kent. He married a Mary Davis in Hastings E. Sussex in December 1800. He died in 1809 and the tory in the family is that he was killed in a fight between smugglers and preventatives. There is a strong possibility that he was a seafensible (a sort of naval home guard) which was formed during the Naspoleonic wars to not only to fight the French and stop any invasions but also to curtail the activities of the smugglers. He was admitted to a masdonic lodge in his late 20's and at that time decribed himself as a mariner. I would love it if someone could help me in this search. Thank you very much Doris Flynn in B.C. The IGI has baptisms for Colin McKENZIE in 1817 at Barvas, Stornaway, Polmont and Kilmorack. 1818 has the name in Barony, Nairn, Knockbain and Urray.
