Here is a l ittle feedback which may be useful to others at some time: Following the helpful responses on this list to my original posting I contacted Lewisham Local Studies by email and the librarian was able to give me the details I wanted from the marriage register the same day (at no charge ) and added his own helpful comments, including: "'Of this parish' is not to be taken too seriously in Lee, where there was a tiny population and a large number of marriages." Well done Lewisham, and thanks to Anne, Charani and Judy for their help. Best wishes to all listers, Robert Hillier
You could try using "Babelfish" - on line computer translation - although it might have difficulty if you are going very far back. Hello, I have few details of this couple beyond knowing that Ann was the daughter of my ancestors,Thos. Ridout, surgeon and his wife, Jane Wanstall, and that she was born at Herne around 1799 and I believe the married at Southampton in 1841; it is therefore unlikely they had children. Ten years later, in the 1851 census, she was shown as being a widow If anyone has information on Thos. Powney I should like to hear from them. Thanks, Nick

You have a choice of Knightrider Baptist Church or All Saints Parish Church. The Baptist Church is named as Maidstone Baptist Church on Google, with a carpark to the left and behind it. All Saints was the original parish church for Maidstone and has the river on the left of it. I'm sure that both of these churches are still in operation. The main towns are Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rainham, collectively known as the Medway Towns or simply Medway. Then there are the smaller places such as Hoo. There's often more than one church in each place so you'll need to watch when the records start for each one. If you can find the couple in the 85 census, that might give you a better starting place, esp if you are sure they did marry each other When looking for a church where a marriage would have, or could have, taken place, I always start with Rochester and work out from there. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
It sounds like it could be Archbishop's Palace to me - that's in Palace Street/Mill Street. It used to be part of the Manor of Maidstone, built in the late 14th century & is now Kent Register Office. Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent. I am sorry if this is vague. I am hoping someone with knowledge of Maidstone can tell me about a building which I came across yesterday. It was on the corner of Mill Street and Palace street and seems to have been a church. Its graveyard has been turned into a very nice public garden and had gravestones around the walls and a huge yew tree. There is a car park right by it.? I tried googling it and also found a aerial view, I couldn't locate its name. All records will be in German but list members would be able to translate for you if the German authorities can't provide a translation. This will take you to all the German lists available: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/DEU/ Otherwise go to http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/index.html Or more specifically: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/DEU/DEUTSCHLAND.html As with many lists, it's very quiet and despite it saying the language is "strictly German", every post I looked at was in English! There's also a newsgroup for Germany which is gatewayed to Rootsweb. I've had a lot of help from them with past queries: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Newsgroup_Gateways/GEN-DE.html There's a mix of German and English language there. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

hello listers, On 21 NOV 1803 Saint Mary The Virgin, Dover, Kent, William BAKER married Mary PATTEN As far as I can tell, they had at least two children: Joseph Patten BAKER baptised 11 Sep 1814 in Woodnesborough William BAKER baptised 11 Feb 1816 in Woodnesborough Is anyone able to confirm if they had any other children and the details of those children? And does anyone have an image of the marriage detail? Many thanks Allison
Hi All I am researching the POUT families for my website. I have Henry POUT, who consistently says on census returns that he was born 1822 at Tylers Hill, (in the parish of St Stephen, Hackington). I suspect that he is the son of William POUT and his wife Elizabeth (nee EWELL), but without access to the registers for Hackington I cannot confirm this. Can anybody help please? I would be very grateful for a lookup of the marriage register for St Margaret's church, Lee. The IGI gives Richard John Rand married Sophia Martha Hillier at Lee 5th Feb 1827. I've just realised that if the register gives Sophia's father's name an obstinate brick wall comes tumbling down. Witness names could also be helpful, if I'm lucky, so every scrap of info from the register is of great interest to me. I'm hoping that I can establish that Sophia is related to one of the Thames watermen Hillier families.
