    1. [KENT-ENG] reThomas Powney & Ann Ridout Family
    2. nicholas wilson
    3. Hello, Further to my query asking for information on the above family I can pass on to anyone who is interested in either family that Thomas Powney was born in Madras in 1775 and died in London in 1847, six years after marrying Ann Ridout at Southampton. There were, naturally no children, but they did 'adopt' a young niece on the Ridout side who later became my great grandmother, Anna Parkinson, nee Robinson, something I only discovered when I obtained a copy of Thos Powney's will

    3. I have done quite a bit of Spicer research in Kent but mainly with a different line but all going back to the Pluckley, Hollingbourne area. I have a William Spicer born 1862 at Folkestone son of Edward Nook Spicer and Sarah Alice Waterman. William had siblings Julia, Edward, Alice, Richard, John, Alfred, Alberta, Sarah and Beatrice. Edward Nook's parents were Richard and Margaret Penny from Dover which is where my lot come from and one was born at Dover Castle Keith -----Original Message----- From: kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter Sent: Friday, 23 April 2010 1:26 AM To: KENT-ENG@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] William SPICER Barbara, The first step is to find William in the 1871 census with his family. He is aged 20 and is the footman to George DUPPA, residing at HOLLINGBROURNE HOUSE kENT. My reason for this inquiry is that my husbands grandfather William SPICER, although he lived in South Wales states on all the census in Wales that he was born in West Ashford. He makes this claim on his marriage certificate and gives his father as John deceased. Having looked at the DUPPA family I have ascertain that they had connection with the West Country bordering on Wales, and the family story was that James walked to Wales from somewhere in Kent beginning with H; of cos you don't think to ask questions when you are a kid, also William was a Waiter all his working life and spent two weeks every year at OKEHAMPTON ARTILLERY CAMP as a waiter. 3. Hi Barbara, 1. To find a birth or a marriage you can get free access to BMD's on this web addy below. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl I have found the marriage entry on freebmd Dive King and Harriett Tolhurst Romney Marsh Volume 5 page 473 Registered June Quarter 1843. To obtain this certificate go to this addy http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ 2. Registrations of BMD's started in the Uk in September 1837, therefore you will have to go to the original Parish Registers for the births or rather baptismal entries of the parents Dive and Harriett. Seeing as Harriet and all the children were born Ivy-Church according to the 1851 census it might be wise to start here. You can go online to the Kent Family History Group and see if there is a CD available for purchase containing the Parish records for Ivy-Church OR If you have a LDS (Mormon) Church family history centre near where you live, then you can order a film of the records for Ivy-Church and get Harriet and the children's records that way. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=566466&subject_disp=England%2C+Kent%2C+Ivy%2Dchurch+%2D+Church+records&columns=*,0,0 Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia My great- great - grand-father was Dive King - married Harriet Tolhurst. 1. Re: [KENT-ENG] Family of THOMAS POWNEY and ANN RIDOUT
    2. pam hillier
    3. Hi Nick, I was just about to re-direct you to the Knightroots website in Hants but I decided to have a quick look see first, and would you believe they have donated some of their transcriptions including Southampton to the OPC project which will be coming out on CD. But have a look because many surrounding areas, such as Portsea, Portsmouth are still on there and you are able to wade through various places and their transcriptions. I suggest a run through of the transcriptions just in case. 1. I see that the marriage comes from the IGI on Familysearch, which is woefully incomplete. 2. Doing a bit of research I can see That as far as I can see there are no Thomas and Ann Powneys (using Pown*, Poun*) also checked under just Ann alone 1851 census has Ann (Powney) as aged 50, widow, therefore born 1801 I can see that there is a sister Emma Ridout unmarried with her in 1851 and therefore the conclusion can be drawn that she is a biological sister. There is definitely a a marriage on Freebmd of a Thomas Powney and a "possible" Ann Ridout BUT I am going to throw some flies in the ointment, because none of us want to clamber up the wrong tree. 1. Sister - I have had sisters on the census that end up to be sister in laws. 2. Marrying in 1841 at age 42 (although not unheard of by any means) unless you have actually seen the marriage entry in Southampton can also mean that Ann is a widow (which is not shown on the IGI entries) Therefore her maiden name would not be Ridout. You really need the marriage certificate to make sure that you are not barking up the wrong tree....literally. 3. I am sorry Nick to be questioning how you came to the conclusions that you have, unless you have some knowledge that I cannot have, in a brief look at your problem. 4. If they were both married before and widowed, then it is possible they did have children that are grown. 5. I can honestly see where you are drawing conclusions......BUT I think you must start with what you know and work forward......the certificate to ascertain that you definitely have the correct family is a MUST at this stage. use the original parish registers where you can. I presume you have Ann's baptism to Thomas Ridout and Jane? Yep it's hard yards. The Parish Registers are available from a local LDS to order and peruse at (Mormon) Family History rooms locally. Sorry for the spanner in the works..... Cheers pam > Hello, > > I have few details of this couple beyond knowing that Ann was the daughter > of my ancestors,Thos. CROWTHER in Ticehurst RD in 1921. This is very close to your friend's information. No Hugh, but perhaps it was added later and not listed when the birth was registered. 2. D. Stuart Hammond
    3. Hi All, Recently a few people have had problems with unsubscribing so I thought this might prove useful. If you are planning to unsubscribe in the near future please keep for reference. IF YOU GET MAIL IN DIGEST MODE (i.e. you get a file once a day) then you need to send a message to KENT-ENG-D-request@rootsweb.com . In the subject line write the word 'unsubscribe' and write the word 'unsubscribe' in the body of the message. IF YOU GET MAIL IN LIST MODE (i.e. you get each message individually) then you need to send a message to KENT-ENG-L-request@rootsweb.com In the subject line write the word 'unsubscribe' and write the word 'unsubscribe' in the body of the message. If all has gone to plan you will receive an automatic notice from rootsweb telling you that you are now unsubscribed. NB Do not send an unsubscribe request as a reply to a message on the list. Please send it as a new message. PROBLEMS: 1) you send a message to digest mode when you are subscribed to list mode or vice versa. You will receive a message telling you your name has not been removed because you weren't on the list. Double check which mode you are subscribed to and make sure the message goes to the correct one. 2) You send a message to the correct mode but still get the message that says you have not been removed because you are not on the list- Have you changed ISP/email address recently? You can ONLY unsubscribe from the address which is on the computer list. If you subscribed under an address which you no longer use then email me privately and I will manually unsub it for you. If you have several email addresses then the following URL may help you ( http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com ). This will tell you which lists you are subscribed to and from which addresses. 3) You have unsubscribed successfully but you still receive mail from the list;. Sometimes it can take a few hours for the server to activate the unsubscribe command, during which time messages will still be sent to you. Also don't forget that messages can fly into cyberspace and stay there for days or weeks before they turn up. There is nothing to be done about these situations, they will sort themselves out. If anyone has any queries about all this then contact me on hammond123hammond@btinternet.com Regards Stuart Hammond Kent List Administrator

    3. Hi Catherine, If you're referring to Ancestry's database of London Parish Registers, I believe the burial register for Woolwich 1800-1812 is not there. It's held at the LMA (P97/MRY/36), so it may appear on Ancestry in due course. On the other hand it may be there under a wrong descriptor, like so many other registers. It may be worth scrutinizing sample pages of other churches with the same name (St Mary Magdalene), since they may have put it in the wrong borough, or combined the images with those of another parish. If the deceased was away from home, then s/he may well have been buried where they died as it would have been expensive to bring them "home". OTOH, if the deceased was not local they may have made provision for the burial to have taken place in the family parish. Burial registers, like baptismal registers, weren't made up at the time but may have been done once a week, once a month or even once a quarter. In the interim a note would have been made on a scrap of paper or committed to memory with the result the scrap got may have been lost or mislaid or memory failed so the event didn't get added to the burial register. Sometimes the BTs will produce the entry if the scrap was found or something jogged the memory. Sometimes entries were noted in a day book but not always. If you give the name/s of the people you're looking for together with any other information you may have that might help, perhaps someone can find the burials. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

However the ones I have seen are in German. the lady I know brings her mother with her to translate. However, I have been told that Dutch and German records have wonderful indicators in the naming patterns which makes research a bit easier.
