    1. [KENT-ENG] PEARSON FAMILY of Tonbridge Area
    2. Chris Page
    3. Has anyone got a connection with, or any information, about the PEARSON family of Tonbridge, Kent, please? I am particularly interested in Thomas PEARSON, born about 1806 at Tonbridge and his wife Sarah, born about 1805 at Tonbridge. In the 1861 Census they were living at 25 St Margarets Place, Tonbridge, Kent [RG9/494, folio 133, page 14] with their four children (they may have had other children): Thomas PEARSON, born about 1832 at Tonbridge Samuel PEARSON, born about 1844 at Tonbridge Ellen PEARSON, born about 1849 at Tonbridge Caroline PEARSON, born about 1850 at Tonbridge. Ellen PEARSON married George T. RICHARDSON, born about 1848 at Rotherfield, Sussex, in 1871 at Croydon, Surrey. Caroline PEARSON married Charles SOUTHON, born about 1850 at Tonbridge, in 1877 at Tonbridge. In the 1881 Census [RG11/919, folio 69, page 17] Ellen and Caroline were living next door to each other at 30 and 28 Lavender Hill,. Tonbridge. Thanks for any information Chris Page

    1. [KENT-ENG] St Margarets Place, Tonbridge, Kent
    2. Chris Page
    3. Does anyone have a Victorian street map of Tonbridge, Kent or know where St Margarets Place, Tonbridge was located, please? The 1861 Census refers to it as "St Margaets Place, Tunbridge Wells Road, Tonbridge" and the 1881 Census to "St Margarets Place, Quarry Hill, Tonbridge". Looking at other pages in the 1861 Census suggests it was located somewhere between the present day Foresters Arms and Waterloo Place on the east side of Quarry Hill (A26) and Pembury Road (A21), but I cannot find it on a present day map. Thanks Chris Page

    3. Hi Elaine The London Borough of Lewisham is certainly not what it used to be but it is not a 'no go' area. You need to be sensible about where you keep your purse etc in much the same way as any area with lots of people, and if you look scared you will be the focus of unwanted attention wherever you are. If you go there, just make sure you know exactly where you want to go, that way you are less likely to look lost and helpless. Google gives you access to bus and train timetables and taxi companies so you should be able to have everything in place before you go. Of course, you may not even have to go there! Google street view [apparently now on google Earth] will have a lot of what you might be looking for anyway. The North West Kent Family History site may also help you with the cemeteries. I found two of my ancestors in the Ladywell/Brockley cemetery transcriptions. Not sure if they have the others cemetaries on there but the two other cemeteries in the area are Hither Green [in Verdant Lane SE6] and Grove Park [Marvels Lane SE12] you can even see the graves on the satellite view on Google. I have been told it is now a very rough place and I have been advised not to go there. My main interest would be in checking out the cemeteries and probably looking at the streets which I have found in the census records. Can anyone give me same advice as to what I should do? Hi listers, On a shipping entry into NSW, dated Jan 1853, my Mary Jane Alexander said her parents Charles and Mary Alexander were both dead, and I have found likely death entries for both of them in Greenwich in 1848. Charles and Mary were married in 1823 and had 4 children, Elizabeth Ann, Mary Jane, Caroline and Henry, all in Woolwich. I have 2 questions I hope SKS can help me with. One, How can I prove these death entries are or are not mine, apart from buying the certs? I have no idea what Charles did for a living. Two, Can anyone find a likely family on the 1841 census for me? Any help appreciated. Cheers, Robyn of Oz.

Grandad Henry(White) came from Shermanbury, SX as a boot maker apprentice to his mothers Uncle and had a shop at Stone.I have a couple of great photos of the main road there when itwas still dirt and was the end of the line fro the tram from Dartford. If any one has any info that might connect to this Jarvis group I would be delighted to share Phil White in New Hampshire USA, Roots in Sussex, Kent and Isle of Wight I am researching the MARTIN family from Preston near Wingham, Kent who lived on Ashwood Farm near Elmstone. My great-great grandfather had the name of Jarvis MARTIN and I have always wondered it the Jarvis was a family name with a link to the JARVIS family. My Jarvis was born abt 1802 in Preston near Wingham, married to Elizabeth RALPH. His father was John MARTIN and mother Mary FARRIER I believe. Please contact me if this is your family or if you know any information related to them. Thanks Sharyn GUTHRIE
