    3. Hi Trish, My grandfather Henry Sisley BIRCH was a member of the 'Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffalo' and when I found this out I became quite fascinated by their history and charitable activities. The D. is for my first name which I do not use. D. Stuart Hammond

    3. Hi Trish, The reason for a donkey being depicted on the sash of the Ancient Order of Shepherds is probably based on which animal the 'good shepherd' entered Jerusalem? It is a matter of trying to put your head in the mindset of the time and at that time Christianity coloured every other consideration including friendly societies. Best D. Stuart Hammond

    3. Hello Paulette, Purely guesswork, but it sounds to me like it may be the name of a farm they were living on at the time. The only thing I could find was an application for an extention to Four Winds, Ashlett Creek, Fawley - http://www.newforest.gov.uk/media/adobe/Bulletin%2019%20JAN%20-12%20MAR%2004.pdf The same people (Pugh) are in the Here & Now Fawley Magazine, shown at Four Winds, Stonehills, Fawley - http://www.fawleychurch.org.uk/Here_and_Now/Magazines/2005/March05.pdf Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > Some of my family members were born at "Fourshills Fawley" - at least I > think that's what the cert says. Richborough is correct. It's between Sandwich and Ramsgate near the mouth of the River Stour. Richborough Castle still exists - but don't think of a Norman Castle, it's more of a mound. -Nigel

    3. Hi Paulette, I was going to reply, but see that someone has already provided the answer I was about to give. Frequently, I seem to get "New" postings with responses tagged on. It's annoying! Any way, gripe over, I wanted to add that people are often appear in the same directory under different lists. They can be found under trades lists and under private residents' lists. It is worth checking these alphabetical and themed lists as well as the descriptions and lists for settlements because you can discover more about these people, or possibly some of their relatives. However, please remember that the commercial directories, such as Kelly's, are not comprehensive - they do not list everyone in the areas which they cover. I believe lists were filled with the names of subscribers, as well as other bits of information of use to the general public.
