It would at least allow you time to decide what to do with it: pass it on to somewhere else or keep it yourself. The WayBack Machine is good but I've notice that it doesn't always capture all the pages on a site or else misses bits, such as pictures. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Thanks Linda and Ross for the reply. Actually I've known this photo for about 20 years from a book in Chatham Library, later Christine Wenn's website and finally Cityark. I'm hoping that somewhere there may be one or two more photos showing different views, maybe the inside. The second thing relates to Christine's website. She was my father's cousin and passed away last December which means when her subscription to the host runs out the site will disappear. It seems a pity that what may be useful information to people in the future will get lost. She was unmarried so there is no husband or children to keep the site on-line. Is there a genealogical site that will preserve and keep the site available? I've looked at the Wayback Machine (www.archive.org) but the photos seem to be missing. Or should I take the site and add it alongside my own one? Recommendations please. I have been looking for my gr. Grandfather listed above for a long time, but to no avail. Family memory said he was born on January 29, 1853 in Linton, Kent, England; however, I just received George C. Edwards naturalization papers and they state his birth place as Luton, Kent County, England. Since I have had no luck finding him in Linton, I wonder if anyone on the list knew how I might find him in Luton? On his Australian marriage license his parents are listed as William James Edwards and Elizabeth Hodges. He supposedly ran away to sea when he was 10-12 years old. Thank you for whatever assistance you might be able to provide. Sincerely, Phyllis K. Swanson Yuma, Arizona, USA

Many thanks to those kind people who replied to my plea about finding William T. Skey in 1871. However, I am still trying to discover where he is. I have his wife and family but not him unfortunately. W

Riding on this thread, does anyone know of a good source for extinct pub photos? I'm looking specifically for The Red Lion and Star in Strood which was run by my gg grandparents until its disappearance around the start of WW1. Hello Phillipa, You might want to consider looking further afield than Kent or Hampshire. Following is a name match (and the date looks reasonable) that might warrant ordering a certificate for checking ages, occupation etc. to see if a match: Groom's Name: James BISHOP Bride's Name: Sarah Ann WARNER Marriage Date: 08 Feb 1838 Marriage Place: Saint George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England I don't have the registration details, but you should be able to find this on FreeBMD. Regards, Jan Isobel
Have you tried FreeBMD ? That will give you the GRO reference and you can then order the birth certificate. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl Remember that just because he was baptised in Kent, that doesn't mean he was born in Kent. _____ From: Philippa Cooper [mailto:pkcooper@aapt.net.au] Sent: Monday, 7 June 2010 5:07 PM To: 'KENT-ENG-D-request@rootsweb.com' Subject: WARNER - SARAH ANN Family mythology has it that my husband's great great grandmother came from Tunbridge Wells. She was born SARAH ANN WARNER and married James Bishop ( of Hampshire). Their first child was born in 1839 so I assume they were married before that. Her husband was born in 1815 so all things being equal Sarah would probably have been born about then. The marriage was not registered in Hampshire so I assume they were married in Tunbridge Wells. She appears on the 1841 census living in Hampshire, and her last child was born in 1843 - I presume she died in childbirth since she had no more children ( after having three in fairly quick succession) and James appears on the 1851 census as a widower. I have looked on IGI for a birth and had no success. Can anyone help with directions? This woman is a major stumbling block in our research! Cheers Philippa in South Australia.
Hi All I am new to the list, I was wondering if anyone is researching John CROOK (1841 census 1841 carpenter) b 1778 (Chatham) m Eliza unknown, the only two children I have found of John and Eliza are Rebecca c 1 Jan 1815 (Chatham) and Benjamin b about 1823. Richard HOWARD (1841 census gardener) Richard's son Thomas R HOWARD m 29 Oct 1839 (St Pancras London) Rebecca CROOK, their children are Thomas 1840, William 1842, Anna E 1845, Benjamin 1848, George 1850 m Livinia BLYTH, James 1854 and Charles 1856. Can you fill in the missing names and dates? Regards andrea
Hi John There is a possible for Stephen with a brother and father Edward born Tonbridge Kent on the 1881 census. This is the only one that comes up when I narrowed him down to the birth registration found by Mary and Anne on the list. "Presuming" this is the right Stephen then this is likely your man. A birth certificate might be the go here to make sure......... I stay at the Thanington on Wincheap[ indoor pool , great breakfasts , and a cozy bar ] , so spend time at The Maidens Head and The Kings Head in that area . Hi everyone, I'm new to the list and I'm trying to find if there's a link between the Hickmott family of Horsmonden/Cranbrook and the Courthope & Hendley families of Cranbrook. I'm not 100% sure there is a connection (it would probably be way back in the 1500s) but I was wondering if anyone else was researching these families and had possibly come across one. Thanking you for any assistance or suggestions. Best wishes, Sarah.

At that time the onus was on the local registrar to find all the new borns. Although he does seem to have found many/most, there are some he missed. The parents were supposed to have gone to the registrar if he didn't come to them but not all of them did. It may be they considered baptism sufficient registration, plus there were some members of the clergy who resented the "government interference". It's also possible George was born before civil registration began and/or that he was born somewhere other than in Staplehurst for whatever reason, eg his mother was visiting friends/relatives when George decided he wasn't going to wait any longer. FreeBMD's chart shows that 1839 appears complete but it can be up to 3% out. Not all the birth indices up to 1857 are complete yet. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
