    3. Hi there Folks, Hope you were not too dissappointed with England only tying the USA, but I enjoyed watching the match. I am hoping that some kind person could take a photo of 11 Watling Street (if it still exists) in Dartford and near the M25. A family connected to mine called Salway used to live there, had a hardware store in Dartford. By the way I have a couple of old photos of the end of the tram line at Horns Cross, taken about 1916 if anyone is interested Phil White in New Hampshire, USA Roots in Sussex and IOW bn Surrey

    3. You're right, my mistake - I followed the 'District Information' link on FreeBMD for Chatham (created 1941) back through Strood and Hoo to Strood to North Aylesford, didn't look at Medway for some reason. Luton as such doesn't get a mention anywhere, must have been too small even in the 1850s Anyway, there's no George Edwards in Medway either. There is this Births Jun 1853 McCallum George Charles Medway 2a 284 which is most likely a red herring. 3. Hello Phyllis, There isn't a marriage on FreeBMD between William (James) EDWARDS and Elizabeth HODGES between 1837-1881, and no birth for George (Charles) EDWARDS 1850-1865. Maybe someone with access to the census can turn the family up for you. It may be though, that he was an orphan, and 'created' a family when he began his new life? Just a thought, as its happened before. On FreeBMD there IS a birth for George Thomas EDWARDS at Linton-Cambridgeshire (3b 494), March qtr 1853, which also covers the date of birth in January 1853. If he left home at a very young age - and has incorrectly remembered his own name - then he may have given incorrect names for his parents as well; speaking personally, I know I gave my own mother's maiden name incorrectly when I was in primary school, it was a similar-sounding name but still wrong, so its easy for a child to twist the facts slightly. It might be worth checking this entry further. Luton isn't in Kent, so again his young memory may be playing tricks. On FreeREG there is a also a baptism for George EDWARDS on 21 August 1853 at Darenth in Kent, parents William (a labourer) and Fanny EDWARDS (there is a burial in Darenth for William EDWARDS in 1870 aged 49 years). Also a baptism in Wymondham-Norfolk for George EDWARDS with parents William and Ann. Darenth is 29km (18 miles) from Linton-Kent; and 68km (42 miles) from Luton. Cheers Trish Nowra >I have been looking for my gr. Grandfather listed above for a long time, >but > to no avail. 3. On FreeBMD, the only George Charles Edwards registered in Kent in the 1850s is this one Births Sep 1851 Edwards George Charles Greenwich 5 231 It's about 30 miles or so from Luton, though and nearly 40 mkiles from Linton. There's no Charles George Edwards registered in Kent between 1850 & 1860 either There's no George Edwards registered in Maidstone (the registration district for Linton) or in North Aylesford (which as far as I can make out was the registration district for Luton at that time). I can't find a marriage for William James Edwards and Elizabeth Hodges either, although there is this Marriages Jun 1848 EDWARDS William Plymouth 9 454 HODGE Elizabeth Plymouth 9 454 However, they may not have married each other as there are 8 names on the page. I would have expected to find him on the 1861 census if he didn't run away until he was 10 or 12 (i.e. mid 1860s) but I couldn't - is it possible he changed his surname when he ran away ? 3. Linda sent this to me privately - I can't help with pre-1800 records, so am reposting her reply in the hope that someone else can. I did try to forward her message to the list but it appeeared as a blank - apologies. 3. A George Thomas EDWARDS was baptised on 5 March 1853 at Sawston (Cambridgeshire), son of George EDWARDS, a labourer and Eliza (source: Cambridgeshire FHS Baptisms Index). Sawston is covered by Linton registration district. This seems likely to be the child whose birth is referred to below.
