Hi, There is a Burberry Lane in Leeds, Kent, not far from the castle: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=582789&y=153347&z=110&sv=Burberry&st=6& tl=Map+of+Burberry+Lane,+Leeds,+Maidstone,+Kent,+ME17&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=m ap.srf use the zoom control to get a wider view. It wasn't uncommon for a street or house name to be used in birth certificates or even in census returns. I agree with other respondents, a name would help us find data for you. Has anybody got the CD rom 16 from the KFHS please? GLoria
Thanks everyone! He was a headmaster of a small, country school and, as Jacquie said, there wasn't so much to spend your money on - mainly food clothing, heating, lighting, and health. As part of the agreement, he was given the free tenancy of a house, so that would have helped! I wondered, about the spending value, because he had two children when he took the job on, but he and my grandmother went on to have a total of twelve children; all living well into old age. I'm sure he would have received salary rises though, I believe, at one stage, and for some years, his pay would have depended on the number of children who, actually, turned up for lessons! I'll have a look deeper into that. Thanks again to all of you. I'm very grateful for your help. -----Original Message----- From: Stella Stanger [mailto:sstanger@sfu.ca] Sent: 27 June 2010 22:26 To: John Newport; KENT-ENG@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] Cost of Living in 1895 http://www.victorianweb.org/economics/wages4.html http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/results.asp#mid In 1870, £100 0s 0d would have the same spending worth of today's £4,570.00 In 1890, £100 0s 0d would have the same spending worth of today's £5,989.00 In 1900, £100 0s 0d would have the same spending worth of today's £5,706.00 In 1905, £100 0s 0d would have the same spending worth of today's £5,735.00 http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/RDavies/arian/current/howmuch.html http://www.victorianweb.org/economics/wages.html http://www.igp-web.com/Carlow/wages.htm Don't know if the above is any help - but interesting - Perhaps a search at National Archive - will be closer to answering your quest. Dear List, Could someone please advise me where I would search for a past member (Vernon Frank KEEMER, born 1892, Gillingham, Kent) of a BBC Orchestra. I am probably looking for at a period between 1910 to 1950.
