    3. Dear Listers, >From around the 1840's onwards a James Edward Mitchell WILLIAMS lived in Blean near Whitstable in somewhere called James Mall/James Hall and his occupation was General Surgeon and Apothecary. In all of the census entries during the late 1800's he was given as unmarried and other members of his household were Ann Goulden who was always given as his Housekeeper or Servant and there were also two others Henry William and Herbert Thomas Goulden who were also given as his sons. I assume at some point he must have adopted these boys but never married their mother Ann. If anyone has any further insight into the lives of either James Williams, Ann Goulden or Henry & Herbert Goulden I would be delighted to hear from you . Cheers Ian in Hong Kong

In the census following the death of our ancestor the son was still living on the same farm under his father's name, but after a lengthy lawsuit by other ancestors he was kicked out and then used either surname in census, marriage and birth record info. It got really confusing then as the children used either/or for their surnames, with one seeming to use a combination of both according to an obit for his wife. Annie in Minnesota

    3. Hi Robyn, As an aside to what Dennis said. If the wife met him in Middlesex and was born in msx herself and she was the person that answered the census taker on census night, therein lies another problem. They both/or just the wife may believe he was born in msx. - there are also boundary changes to take into consideration.....although this would not apply for Canterbury/ middlesex - it's something to take into consideration in the future. 3. CROMPTON James born 16 August 1796. Son of James CROMPTON & Elizabeth ? Christened 11 Sep 1796 Rochester, Kent, ENGLAND. Would like to establish a link between this James CROMPTON and the James CRAMPTON whose name was recorded as CROMPTON for the birth of his first child. CRAMPTON James born 1796 Canterbury Kent, ENGLAND (Ref. England Census 1851 & 1861). 1841 Census says born Middlesex. Why would he state Middlesex? Married Mary Ann LAMBERTH 17 Nov 1834 Saint James, Paddington, London. Occupations: cabinet maker, gentleman's servant, carpenter, labourer. CROMPTON James & Mary Ann: baptism of son Robert James CROMPTON 29 May 1836 (b. 3 Sep 1835). Abode (1835-1839): 19 Hertford Street, St. Marylebone Middlesex. Robert James possibly died in infancy. CRAMPTON: additional children of James & Mary Ann (hereafter named CRAMPTON) included: Mary Ann (1837-1839), Eliza (1839-1909), William (1842-1900?), Edward (1845- ?). Both William & Edward used the name CROMPTON later in their lives. Any earlier information e.g. marriage or more children for James CROMPTON & Elizabeth (Rochester Kent, ENGLAND) would be greatly appreciated. Robina QLD, AUSTRALIA

    3. hello Robina, With ref; place of birth of your James Crampton. Kent or Middlesex? The differing places of birth given on census returns only provide a guide for the serious researcher. To have different birth places recorded on various census returns for the same person is quite common. If the place of birth is so important you will have to prove the place of birth by original documents relating to the birth. Sadly for pre- civil registration, 1st. July 1837, such proof may well be impossible. Here is one case of my own which could have got into the 1951 to 1901 census returns and I am the suject. I was born at Hoo St. Mary in Kent and while only a few weeks old was moved with the family to another part of Kent. As a result I grew up in the new parish and I was almost 18 years of age when I discovered my birth place was some miles away. Sorry I can't help with the other questions. 3. Hi good FH devotees Was shown a mixed bunch of old photos that had some pictures that I thought might be of interest to listers both here in the UK and down under. I took copies and can send if they prove of any personal consequence. There's one of the buffet room provided for use by New Zealand forces convalescing in a Hornchurch, Essex, hospital, First World War time. Another shows the sailing ship Coonatto docked in Adelaide in the 1860s. It was later wrecked off the English South Coast. Then there are four photographs of Romford, Raphael Park about 1908, and Gallows Corner circa 1920, South Street about 1938 - all fascinating! Don't all rush. Michael in warm Holland-on-Sea, Essex.

In the same register I found a George Godden with the same parents, Thomas and Elizabeth, but Phillis's sisters are not found in High Halstow. If anyone in the course of research has come across any or all of these Godden sisters, I would be grateful to share information, and of course to pass on what I know of Jane, who was my g-g-g-grandmother. 2. Peter
    3. Pauline, Have you discounted this one? Groom's Name: John William Wood Bride's Name: Jane Filner Ballard Marriage Date: 28 May 1867 Marriage Place: Walmer, Kent, England Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I06670-6 Peter ___________________________________________________________________- I have been trying for a long time to find the first marriage of my g-grandfather, John WOOD of Tenterden. According to the family story, he was married very briefly and only a matter of months and there were no children. He was born in 1845 in TENTERDEN to Thomas & Susan WOOD. He married Jane ? probably in 1868-1870. I have her death certificate which states she was 25 years old, the wife of John Wood, Draper (Master) and died of Dropsy on 17th September, 1870 in TENTERDEN. There is an MI which confirms this: "Jane, wife of John WOOD of TENTERDEN, died 17th September, 1870, aged 25". The excellent Mid-Kent Marriages does not have anything, nor does Freebmd for TENTERDEN and surrounding areas so assume the marriage took place elsewhere. I have tried to check all the Janes marrying a John WOOD, going back several years of which there are over 30. I have also checked all the Janes born in TENTERDEN who would have been 25. One looked good, Jane JAMES, born in Tenterden in 1845 and married a John WOOD in Canterbury in 1868. However, the marriage certificate shows two completely different people. WOOD is such an easy name, but I have also checked Woods and Ward just in case. John then married Ellen OLDBURY in Knighton, Radnorshire where his brother had briefly been a Minister before he died there. If anybody has any suggestions on how I can find this marriage, I would be very grateful. Pauline Anderson Ontario, Canada

    1. [KENT-ENG] Suggestions for New Subscribers
    2. EVELYN WALLACE
    3. There seem to be some new subscribers to this rootsweb list. May I suggest that no matter what region of the world you are researching, giving surnames alone is not generally going to get the responses you desire. What century are you talking about? Were your people in Kent for several centuries? Each query needs: 1) surname at least, given names preferred; 2) place--if Kent, then we assume that, but if you can be more exact, please do so 3) WHEN? Was it at the Battle of Hastings? Or, was it last year?. So, so to sum up what your query needs--online or in a publication: Name Place Date - approximation is OK. You must have some clue. I don't know about you, but my English people (my maternal line) were migratory, and many genealogists, professional and otherwise, discover this about their own lines My grandmother's line started out in Suffolk (birth and marriage), migrated to area near Melbourne, then migrated to Kent, then to East Sussex, and then to the USA--all in one generation!!! And the widowed mother came back to England--to Bedfordshire, but died in Kent!!! Civil registration and censuses helped but so did a brief recorded family history by my uncle, American born. I have heard lectures about labor fairs, held each year. Tenants frequently had to vacate their residences so that the newly hired laborers could move right in. Even persons with skills moved for employment reasons. Some of the booklets which the Society of Genealogists as well as the Federation of Family History Societies has for sale might help in your searches, even if you are quite experienced. Family history is hard work!!! E.W.Wallace
