Hello Rod Well your message helped solve that confusion. I have no family connections with your ancestors, but I do have a CD of many early Kent wills. And when there is enquiries similar to yours I call up the comprehensive index and found the one Holness listed and from thence was able to see what this long gone person arranged for the distribution of his estate. At that time he must have been of some importance in the community as the peasantry would not have been in any position to hand on anything and to think about leaving instruction concerning their possessions which were probably next to nil. Given population at that time I think you would be able seriously to regard said Andrew Holness as one of your Tudor ancestors. Just need to look at the LDS records to see if you can trace folk that could give you a link between this early record and your John Holness of Bekesbourne. That district once more is close to Wingham, 3.3 miles distant. You might find the free ParLoc download a useful source of information about localities across Britain, provides good details and calculates distances between registration districts. Actually a fascinating source of interest aside from genealogy. Hello Bob The baptism occurred only once, but has been transcribed under both dates because the register was probably using the dual date system. Allow me to explain: >From the 12th century to 1752, England used the Julian calendar and the year began on Lady Day (25 March). However, from the 16th century onwards, countries in continental Europe began to change to the Gregorian calendar, with the year beginning on 1 January. So for over a century there was a transitional period, during which it became common English usage to express dates between 1 January and 25 March as (for instance) 12 March 1748/49. You can order the film of the Hawkhurst registers from your nearest LDS centre. I am trying to trace the birth of my wife's 5 x gt grandfather Nimrod BURTON. I have traced this, her maternal line, from present day to his wedding in Basford, Nottingham in 1777 to Sarah ADKINSON both of that parish. I believe that Sarah was born in Nottingham. Despite there being a presence of the BURTON name back to the 1500's in that parish I cannot find a birth for him but there is a baptism on FamilySearch for a Nimrod BURTON to Joshua BURTON and Ann recorded twice - 12 /3/ 1748 and the same date 1749 in Hawkhurst, Kent. Joshua is a name used continually in the family and with Nimrod being such an unusual name I feel there must be some connection. I have searched Find My Past and Family Search but cannot find any other reference to records specifically in that parish although there are various BURTON records at that time in Kent but none to Joshua and Ann. If anyone can point me to further information that would enable me to take this line further I would be extremely grateful. Bob
My apology it is Cowden Kent in which John Tillinghast was living when his son, Richard was born 1630. I am looking for marriage or burial information for John Tillinghast of Cowden, Kent. I am searching for the burial of a John TILLINGHAST who lived in Cowden Kent and had a son, Richard Tillinghast in Cowden in 1630. I am seeking his marriage and/or burial because they may tell me what his occupation was...which will help to identify this man. Any help anyone can be is most welcomed. Hello Rod Just wondering whether you ever received my mail about an early Holness will of which I have details. A blanket thank you is hardly appropriate for the help you have received, takes little time to write to each individually.
