I am trying to find something of the ancestry of Raymond Francis Crafter. He was born in 1938 in Croydon and adopted in 1942. I think his mother may have been Gertrude. I have information since his adoption so do not need that. TIA Melvyn.
Hi, Does anyone know if the church records have been copied and are available anywhere for Lower Halstow? Where would people in the mid 1800s be buried if not at the Church? Thanks, Gloria
Hi Bob I remember when I first started my family tree I asked dad if we had any athletes in our ancestry. He thought about, then said, not really but we once had a boxer. I thought wow! Then he said...but we had to give him away because he chewed up all the shoes. Kind regards Ann Spiro Kent FHS member#9397
Hi Ann, many thanks for the morning smile. I've often wondered if you are any connection to him/her of the 'graph' fame? ;-) Snap! :-o ;-) Bob in Spain. Researching BOXER anywhere. Thank you Bob, I've never seen "Higgler" spelt either, He may well have been one before he went on to be a farmer. George Rainham, Kent.
Could it be 'HIGLER' (I admit I've only ever seen it spelled with two 'g's but .....................) A Higler/Higgler is a small-time dealer. Rag & bone/scrap metal/knife seller, that sort of thing. I have traced a colleague's Kent ancestor back to Middlesex in the 1851 census, however, I cannot work out occupation given. The ancestor is James THIRGOOD, born 1826, Enfield, Middlesex. The census details are: Piece: 1703 Folio: 505 Page: 25 The transcription details states "Hiyler". On the image, the word , to my eyes, ends with "...yler". In the consequential censuses James is a farmer of several acres. Can anyone assist please? George Rainham, Kent.
Hi Jack I am hoping to add the will of Margaratt Beeching to the Kent Genealogy website will transcripts. One problem is I can't find the will listed on the Kent indexes. Can you tell me which court it was probated at? If you have a document reference that would be even better. Would you like me to include an email link for you in case anyone wants to contact you about it? Obviously they can do that already through the Kent list as your email will remain in the archives. Finally, if you have any other Kent will transcripts, or extracts, pre 1858 I welcome all contributions to the website. I have from Family Search.org the 1871 census for England and Wales that reads like this Name Robert Edmonstone Event Census Event Date 02 Apr. 1871 Gender Male Relationship to Head of Household Patient Birthplace Kelso Scotland Record Type Household Registration District Medway Sub-District Gillingham Event Parish Chatham County Kent Robert Edmonstone was my great grandfather, and my question is would the actual census provide any more information than this, for example is this a hospital, and if so what kind of hospital, and would it be worth ordering the film from the LDS I would appreciate any information from someone familiar with this census Dale Edmonstone Canada
Dale, If you contact me offline I will give you the information you request re: your great grandfather Robert Edmonstone. Thanks for the comments, Anne. A worse case! I'm aware of a couple of other, similarly fickle, Stoner lines. No doubt there is an explanation but we just don't know what it is, and whether we'd consider it logical! There may not be any logical explanation Alan. My maternal great-grandfather appears in certificates and some censuses as either SHERIDAN or SHERRINGTON ( I can understand that, as he and his wives (2) were illiterate, but also in some censuses as HARRIS as does his father. We've never found out why. The IGI has a marriage in West Farleigh 13/2/1821 between William STAPELS and Alice SMITH. Then baptisms with parents William STONER and Alice West Farleigh 7/12/1823 of James STONER Hunton 9/4/1826 of John STONER Hunton 6/7/1828 of William STONER Hunton 23/5/1830 of Edmund STONER then a move to Sussex where the PR has Nuthurst 22/7/1832 Elizabeth STONER Nuthurst 31/8/1834 Ann STONER Parents William and Alice are STAPLES in censuses and their deaths in 1865 and 1876. Their family is to be found as either STAPLES or STONER without obvious pattern. For example James marries and dies as STONER. In 1841 and 1851 (with his parents) he is STAPLES, and again in 1871 and 1901. In 1861, 1881, and 1891 he is STONER. I believe William junior's tombstone shows both names. My question is whether anyone knows this family and/or can suggest the reason for the two name approach. Why would William STAPELS and Alice SMITH become STONER for baptisms. Father William is shown in 1851 born West Farleigh 1792, with Alice perhaps ditto 1795. In 1861 William is born Tunbridge, Alice West Farleigh. Any thoughts welcomed. Thanks, Alan Stoner
