In the 1911 census my grandfather was living at No.10 Odo Road, Dover. A kind gentle man has just sent me a photograph of the 1919 peace party given in the street. My grandfather and his family could be amongst the people shown there but I am not sure. He was listed as a Master Mariner and he worked for the War Department on a ship at Dover. Looking at recent google streetmaps of Odo Road, I find it difficult to find No. 10. Have I missed it? Is it still there? It could have been a naval house or his own or rented. I have no idea as I have taken up researching this grandfather that I never knew as his wife Ada died 2 years before I was born. He later remarried and lived Woolwich London. My mother Winifred Pressey was born at No.10 Odo Road as shown in the 1911 census but I do not know how long they were there or where they moved on to. Any help would be appreciated. I know they moved about. I suppose his work for the War Department was the reason. Thank you for any leads. April
Could someone tell me what the name of the church would be for Chatham, Kent in 1807? Would the parish registers for it be in the Medway archives? Annie in Minnesota

Searching my Divett family I have found a grave at the St. Mary’s Westerham Church. It is in the churchyard on the east side of the church on a slope. It reads, “Sarah Mackie who died February 1863 age 98 and her sister, Maria Divett age 89 who died September 1866. There is a crest carved into the stone that is of particular interest to me. The grave is at site III – 12. Would someone be able to take a photograph of this memorial and e-mail me the result. It would be greatly appreciated thank you. Ernie Parker, Mosgiel New Zealand.

If you register and venture into New Familysearch, (the area with the pedigree trees) make sure you verify the information before adding to your own trees. Personally I have found this area is not good for my health and well-being. In other words it is driving me insane!! So far I have found my gt.gt.gt grandfather is a son of himself and his wife, their daughter was married to her niece's husband, my grandmother has a new name, my father died in 1946 when I know I attended his funeral in 2009. The unfortunate part is the person who added the information is the only person who can delete it. I have no complaints with the area that has the BMD's etc. Cheers, Diane -----Original Message----- From: On Behalf Of Barry Millington Sent: Tuesday, 27 March 2012 7:50 a.m. To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] familysarch website try www new.familysearch.org
Looks like I will be doing Sussex family since the Kent Record Office will still be shut when I am in the area. Kent ancestors will have to wait yet again. Regards Kevin >
After many months absence from researching my family tree, I am now back into it. Can a Lister help me with understanding the new LDS website?. To day I clicked onto http://www.familysearch.com and entered the name of my ancestor, birth and country England U.K and all that came up was for births, marriages for the name but in the U.S.A and Canada. What have I done wrong, or, failed to do. Help please Phyllis Bartlett

I had the same problem after being away from it for some time! Philip's suggestion is the way to go as it then leads to a list of all the British collections (e.g. Censuses, BMDs etc.)and it's easier to narrow your search down from there. Further to my email yesterday I found an article in The Era, 28 August 1864 which told me, Freeman THOMPSON aged 50 was aboard the Fawn a lugger from Deal which was ran over by the steamer Biddick and sank at North Foreland. All the fisherman perished including, James William REDSULL aged 25, Edward WELLS aged 41, John Riley aged 24. Unfortunately no exact date of the accident is given in the article. This explains why I cannot find a recorded death for Freeman THOMPSON as the article goes on to say a reward is offered for the recovery of their bodies. Now I will look for a second marriage for Freeman's widow. Cheers, Diane New Zealand.
hello Kevin, You need the Kent County Record Office at Maidstone. Not yet though! The old one is closed and the new one has not yet opened. It is expected soon. Dennis Bramble. Lovely building right on the roundabout going into Maidstone from the Chatham end and nice and close to railway stations - not sure if there is parking round the back. Maidstone Library closed today to get ready for the move. Regards Lozzie T
Freeman THOMPSON married Mary Ann Cavell DURBAN on 11th February 1840 at the Parish Church Deal, Kent. Freeman a 'waterman' resided at Beach Street and is the son of Richard William THOMPSON also a 'waterman'. Mary lived at Middle Street and is the daughter of William Hayward DURBAN also a 'waterman' and Jemima MORRIS. Their eldest child Mary Ann Louisa THOMPSON, was baptised 4 August 1841, at Deal and married Henry FRY a 'wheeler' in the Royal Artillery at St. Andrews Church, Deal on 29 July 1860. On 22 November 1860 they disembarked at Auckland, New Zealand and were stationed at the Newton Barracks. Mary Ann Louisa FRY, died in New Zealand when her youngest daughter Emily was a baby, about 1868/69, her death wasn't officially registered, nor was her daughter Emily's birth registered. I haven't been able to find a death in England of Freeman THOMPSON nor his wife Mary. As they had other children, would anyone on the list be researching this family? Cheers, Diane New Zealand.
Hi Listers, Can some kind sole please let me know what Record Office I need to visit to see the Parish Records for the parishes that make up the Tenterden and Cranbrook Registration Districts. Regards Kevin
