Hi Catherine It looks like you met up with the old baseborn cover-up possibly So I find this: Augusta Tapley is stated to be 15 years of age Baptised 30 May 1836 in Rainham, Kent Mother is Ann Tapley - single woman Abode is Higham, Kent Further to this Augusta Tapley also had a base born child too Louisa Tapley Baptised at Rainham, Kent 9 January 1842 Mother Augusta Tapley Single woman Abode Rainham John Day -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Catherine Randall Sent: Sunday, 1 April 2012 7:07 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [KENT-ENG] Searching for 1822 TAPLEY bap help please I have been looking through pages of parish records looking for the baptism of Augusta Tapley b. 1820-1823. In every census it says she's from Chatham, Kent. Her father is James. She married John Brown July 16, 1843 in Milton next Gravesend. I've searched Chatham records 1819-1825 with no mention of any TAPLEY family. I've also searched Rainham (she's there in 1841) and Gillingham with no success. Does anyone have any other suggestions where to search. Thanks for any help. Sorry John. Our messages crossed in mid-air! regarding the 1851 census. No further reply needed. Thanks ever so much. John: Thanks so much for that information. I guess I didn't go far enough with the Rainham baps to find Augusta. I wondered if she had been a late bap and that's why I went to 1825 in Chatham. I'll check for the images for her in Rainham. I have a copy of the 1851 census page from Ancestry and I don't see the "base born" for Louisa on the page. Is it marked on some other page? Thanks so much. Hi Bob, When did the Burtons come from Essex? I am looking for John Burton b. 1858c, his Australian Death Certificate has his father as William and that he also was born in Kent. John arrived in Australia 1881. Cheers, Christine, QLD
Hi Bob In 1891 Alfred's parents were at 47 Pier Road, Gillingham. Father Alfred b 1857 Mortlake, Surrey and mother Susanna b 1861 Maidstone, Kent. Son Alfred is not with them but they have son Charles b 1879 Gillingham and daughter Elizabeth b 1889 Gillingham. Had a quick look for son Alfred but can't find him. In 1901 Susanna is on her own with children (although says married)Charles b 1874 Gillingham, Alfred b 1880 Gillingham, Lizzie b 1889 Gillingham and William b 1893 Gillingham. There is a marr on FreeBMD for an Alfred Smith & Susan Staniford Mar Qtr. 1880 Medway district. The marr should be on Cityark and should give you details of their parents. Hi Sue Thank you very much for such a huge amount of interesting & valuable information -- it will keep me occupied for some time. I believe Thomas & Caroline's son, James S (Shipwash) was my great-grandfather. He married a Rosetta Phyllis Richmond, about whom I really know very little. Once again, thanks for being so prompt & helpful. Cheers ... Hi List, I am help a friend out here with this fellow. This what we know: Australian family believed that he 'may' have changed his name or part of it - when he deserted HMS Inconstant in Sydney, Australia in 1881. For the rest of his life he was known as John Nicholas BURTON b. 14 June 1858 in Depjard(is there such a place?), Kent. On his Australian Death Certificate in 1929 his place of birth is listed as Kent and that his father was William. He worked on the land in Australia. His childrens names are: Gilbert Walter Blanche Matilda Lucy Maud Mabel Annie Phoebe Ada Emily Alfred Sylvester Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you, Christine QLD

He was listed as a Master Mariner and he worked for the War Department on a ship at Dover. Looking at recent google streetmaps of Odo Road, I find it difficult to find No. 10. Have I missed it? Is it still there? It could have been a naval house or his own or rented. I have no idea as I have taken up researching this grandfather that I never knew as his wife Ada died 2 years before I was born. He later remarried and lived Woolwich London. My mother Winifred Pressey was born at No.10 Odo Road as shown in the 1911 census but I do not know how long they were there or where they moved on to. Any help would be appreciated. I know they moved about. I suppose his work for the War Department was the reason. Thank you for any leads. Hi April Unfortunately number 10 no longer exists. During WW2 this end of Odo Road suffered damage from enemy shelling. Numbers 6, 8 & 10 were demolished. A pair of semi-detached houses were subsequently built in the space formerly occupied by the three houses. These were numbered 6 & 8 and the next house along is therefore number 12. So number 10 is gone for ever.
