    1. Re: [KENT-ENG] Joseph William WELLS born 1912
    2. Sue Slater
    3. Hi John If he's the Joseph W Wells reg. in Bexley district Mar Qtr. 1912 his mother's maiden name is given on FreeBMD as Tuthill. Looks like the marriage of Joseph senior and Catherine Tuthill in Willesden district Sep Qtr. 1911. Catherine is working as a domestic servant for the Terry family at 22 Chandos Road, Willesden at 1911 census - shown as b Dublin 1893. I can only see two Joseph Wells in Willesden at 1911 - one Joseph William Wells is a butcher but only shown as aged 15 b Paddington - his father, James William, is a stableman and the other Joseph is aged 33, a Stoker, whose father Joseph is an "Ironer". I suppose it is possible that Joseph was only 16 when he got married and Catherine about 19. 3. According to Ancestry (Free BMD ) a JOseph William Wells was born in the March quarter of 1912 in the Bromley District which covered Foots Cray. His mother's maiden name was Tuthill. According to Free BMD Joseph W Wells & Catherine Tuthill were married in Willesden London in the September quarter 1911 (3a 610) Ancestry's 1911 census summary has him living with his parents(?) in Willesden > 1911 England Census about Joseph William Wells > > Name: Joseph William Wells > Age in 1911: 15 > Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896 > Relation to Head: Son > Gender: Male > Civil parish: Willesden > County/Island: Middlesex > Country: England > Street Address: Stone Cottage, Dudding Hill Lane, Willesden > Marital Status: Single > Occupation: Butcher > Registration district: Willesden > Registration District Number: 129 > Sub-registration district: Willesden > ED, institution, or vessel: 80 > Household schedule number: 394 > Piece: 7060 > Household Members: > Name Age > James William Wells 45 > Susannah Wells 45 > Edith May Wells 18 > Joseph William Wells 15 > > Source Citation: Class: RG14; Piece: 7060; Schedule Number: 394; . There is a Catherine Tuthill, a domestic servant born in Dublin also in Willesden in that census. > 1911 England Census about Catherine Tuthill > > Name: Catherine Tuthill > Age in 1911: 18 > Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893 > Relation to Head: Servant > Gender: Female > Birth Place: Dublin, Ireland > Civil parish: Willesden > County/Island: Middlesex > Country: England > Street Address: 22 Chandos Road, Cricklewood, Willesden N W > Marital Status: Single > Occupation: Domestic > Registration district: Willesden > Registration District Number: 129 > Sub-registration district: Willesden > ED, institution, or vessel: 69 > Household schedule number: 252 > Piece: 7049 > Household Members: > Name Age > William James Terry 33 > Irene Clare Terry 26 > Geoffrey Eric Terry 2 > Doris E M Ludford 15 > Catherine Tuthill 18 > > > Source Citation: Class: RG14; Piece: 7049; Schedule Number: 252; . If you get his birth certificate and their marriage certificate you should be able to get details of Catherine's parentage. Unfortunately the marriage doesn't seem to be on Ancestry's London Marriages. 3. Many thanks to Sue Slater and Ann Peat for helping me identify Joseph William Wells. With your clues I have been able to trace the family to the censuses of 1841 and 1851 in Marylebone, London. Ann Wells ,widow, "charwoman," born 1799-1806 at St. Marylebone, was listed as a widow with children Thomas W. born c. 1826, Richard E. born c.1831-2, Elizabeth born c.1833-4 and Sarah born c.1836-7. Finding the identity of the husband of Ann Wells is now the problem. I have been unable to find baptismal records at St. Marylebone that might give me clues to his name. Any ideas. I promise this will be my last question. Thank you for your wonderful help. I'm coming to Kent in June and I'm trying to help another "amateur" genealogist discover his heritage before my trip. We are trying to establish a common ancestor. Regards, John Wells

    3. Hi All Please remember that the large Poor Law Union Workhouses were only erected after the 1834 Act of Parliament. Prior to this each parish was responsible for the provision of relief to it's own poor, and this took many different forms. 3. Hi everyone, In the early 1800s my ancestor Elizabeth Gilham had two illegitimate children to two different fathers. She lived in Aldington and the Overseers accounts records payments for her lying in and support. I am hoping that someone on the list can provide some additional information in relation to the entries that refer to: - a journey to Canterbury with Elizabeth Gilham and expenses paid to James Crothall in respect of Elizabeth Gilham. This was around 1803. Would she have been sent to a workhouse at Canterbury? Was James Crothall connected to the workhouse or overseer? The father of this child was Thomas Carpenter who had a farm at Aldington Corner. I would love to know more about the farm, about Thomas (late in life he married his servant, Sarah Mummery and seems not to have had any legitimate children as his property was left to his wife, nieces and nephews). - a payment for the journey to William Deeds Esquire with Thomas Carpenter. Was Deeds a solicitor by any chance? Perhaps the journey was to make arrangements for the regular payments that Thomas made towards his son's support. Or perhaps he was seeking to avoid the commitment? I would appreciate any relevant local and family history information - I think I have discovered all I can by googling but if you can point me in the direction of journal articles or local history publications that I can obtain (from Australia) that would be very much appreciated. Regards, Lynne (Canberra, Australia)
