    1. [KENT-ENG] Tichbourne/Tichburne, etc
    2. Donna Casey
    3. Does anyone on the Kent list have a pedigree of the Tichbourne/Tichburne family of Cowden? (Including Richard and/or Robert Tichburne).  I am trying to confirm or disprove the existence of a family with the surname Pardon connected to the Tichburne family. I am aware of John Tillinghast having married Dorothie Tichburne June 6, 1627 in London....John's mother was Alice Pardon Tillinghast.  Aside from that connection, I am seeking information that Alice Pardon may have been a cousin to a line in the Tichburne family c1570 - 1625. Thank you for any help anyone can provide. Donna TILLINGHAST Casey Michigan, USA   The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it will change; the realist adjusts the sails.

    1. [KENT-ENG] BROWN , TRAMP , SPRINGATE & GODWIN ( 1811 )
    2. From The Aberdeen Journal ( Aberdeen, Scotland ), Wednesday, October 2, 1811; Issue 3325.   A most melancholy accident happened on Sunday at Sheerness, being the Anniversary of his Majesty's Coronation. The guns on the battery ( 42 pounders ), as usual, were preparing to fire a Royal Salute, when John BROWN and James TRAMP were in act of loading the same, and ramming home wadding, one of the guns unfortunately discharged its contents, and the unfortunate men were blown almost to atoms. -   Two other men, named SPRINGATE  and  GODWIN , who were assisting at the guns, were most dangerously wounded: what adds to the calamity, the unfortunate sufferers have left wives and families.

    1. [KENT-ENG] Concrete structure on beach near Dover
    2. D C Banks
    3. Hi all Some information please on a memory from my own personal history. I used to visit my grandfather Hubert Stroud in Dover in my school holidays when I was young. He lived in Kings Ropewalk, his house has since been demolished to make way for the road to Folkestone. I remember being taken over the footbridge onto the beach, past the entrance to the tunnel under Shakespeare Cliff and west along the beach. At some point we had to climb an 'iron' ladder up a concrete structure to continue further. The ladder was no more than bits of round iron, formed like a large staple and sunk into the concrete. The question is what was this structure? Perhaps it was left over from the war, I was last there in the late 1950's. Any information will be much appreciated. A useless bit of info, my grandfather was 'on the railways' and every evening of my holiday he would take me up to the seat above the entrance to the tunnel and we would watch the Golden Arrow steam past. Thanks David

    3. Hi   I was wondering if anyone else is researching Sarah Lissney (or one of the derivations above) who was born at Chislehurst c 1872, if so we might be able to help each other as I more or less have her life from her marriage in 1818 till her death in Greenwich in 1862.    I have found a Sarah Lessney born 1873 with parents John and Mary, and siblings William, Catherine and Mary.   However, although she named her child Catherine (perhaps after her sister) born c 1807-1811 also in Chislehurst, I am still not sure I have the correct one.   As I said, if anyone is related, I would be delighted if they could contact me so we could share notes OR if anyone is able to peep into the register to see if they can find Catherine Lissney with a mother Sarah, I would be so grateful.   Regards   Eveline

    1. [KENT-ENG] SHRUBB , CLAYDON & THORN ( 1856 )
    2. >From Jackson's Oxford Journal, Saturday, June 21, 1856; Issue 5382.   AYLESBURY. MELANCHOLY CASE. - On Sunday morning last Mrs. SHRUBB , the wife of Mr. SHRUBB , formerly engineer at the Bucks County Lunatic Asylum, at Stone, near Aylesbury, was seized with a fit, and died about eight o'clock the same evening, being insensible and unable to speak a word during the whole of the time.  A family of four children are left motherless; and what makes this case more heartrending is the fact that SHRUBB is either in the Crimea at the present time or on his return home, so that for some time he cannot be made acquainted with the melancholy tidings.   N.B.  NOT connected to our research, but we have worked out that this was probably CHARLES SHRUBB & BETS(E)Y  ANN ( nee CLAYDON ) They married in St. Giles, London/ Middlesex June Qtr. 1846.  Charles remarried to Elizabeth  ( possibly Elizabeth THORN in Lambeth in Dec Qtr 1860 ) and on the 1861 census they were living in Plumstead, Kent, with his children by Betsy, namely  Sarah 10, born in Surrey,  Charles 8, born in Hanwell, Middlesex,  Betsy aged 7, born in Stone, Bucks, & Edmund 5 born in Stone, Bucks.   Charles was born in Reigate, Surrey,  Betsy Ann CLAYDON in Suffolk, & Elizabeth in Norwood Surrey. This is being submitted to the SURREY, MIDDLESEX, KENT, BUCKS & SUFFOLK lists in hopes that it will help someone's research.

    1. [KENT-ENG] Edward BRICE of Canterbury (1729 )
    2. From Weekly Journal or British Gazetteer ( London, England ), Saturday, December 13, 1729; Issue 237.   Dover, Dec. 6. We learn from Canterbury, that on Tuesday last Week, Edward BRICE , at the THREE KINGS in that City, having some Words with his Brother, took a red hot Poker out of the Fire and run him into the Throat, of which he died on Thursday; the said BRICE was thereon committed to Gaol, in order to his being brought to Justice.   Dover, Dec. 9. The Misfortune of Mr. BRICE of Canterbury happened some Time since, tho' the other died but on Thursday last; before which, his Brother, the Deceased, forgave him, being the Aggressor:  He is not committed, but, as we hear, bailed.

    3. My sincere thanks to Antony Lambert and Peter Martin for their responses to my request for information on the missing George Holtum. I was aware of a 1930 death in Australia but committed one of the cardinal sins of genealogy by assuming it was for another George. I am completely satisfied that we can put this one to rest. However, I'm not sure that Alice and the kids emigrated with George -- too much of a coincidence to return to the same street in Dover. BTW, George Charles HOLTUM 1870-1930 was s/o Richard HOLTUM & Charlotte Elizabeth KING. George Frederick HOLTUM 1865-1839 was s/o Daniel HOLTUM & Elizabeth (Kate) CACKETT. Again, many thanks Harry C Jacobs

    3. George (no middle name) HOLTUM's birth was recorded in the 3rd qtr of 1868. He was the first child of George HOLTUM and Jane PARSONS. On 20 Jun 1892 he married Alice Mary HUDSON. The 1901 census shows the young George, his wife and two children living at 50 Morins Road, Dover, Kent. His occupation is recorded as 'Professor of Music.' In 1902 he was declared bankrupt according to a report in the Edinburgh Gazette. Allegedly he had operated a business at 15 Folkestone Road, Dover but the 1901 census shows this address as a residence. The 1911 ceusus shows George, his wife and three children living at 12 Minerva Avenue, Dover. His occupation is now 'Piano Tuner.' We now skip ahead to 1939 when we find Alice Mary HOLTUM, widow has expired. The probate record show her residence as 11 Minerva Avenue, Dover. I have been unable to find a death entry for "young" George. Before anyone suggest the 1927 death in W Ashford ... that was his Dad (my ggf). Any ideas, anyone? Harry C Jacobs SUDBURY, ON, Canada
