I am a bit suspicious of info there, legacy of a mispent youth and finding mostly american info :) 1850 could be the year of birth based off his death certificate, and 14th feb would match that too - he died Feb 28th at 96 in 1946. But there's only one Henry Moore registered in Kent in the first half of that year, and he's a Henry James, on Sheppey (freebmd.org.uk) thank you for the reply :) Damien > Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2012 15:29:29 +1000 >> From: [email protected] >> To: [email protected] >> Subject: [KENT-ENG] Moore family in Dover c 1850 onward? >> >> Hi all, >> >> I am hoping someone might be able to help me out. 3. Hi all, I am hoping someone might be able to help me out. I have an ancestor by the name of Henry Thomas Moore that I am trying to hunt down. He listed his parents as Thomas Moore (Labourer) and Hannah Treacy or Theacy on his wedding certificate. His age fluctuates a little bit from document to document, giving a birth year somewhere between 1848 to 1852. He mostly claims to have been born in Dover (although one document says Cambridge, which was a bit odd), and family anecdotes say Dover as well. He came to Australia - I think in 1866 - and married there in 1875. His parents remained in England, and family anecdote says that he exchanged letters with his mother for some time. Beyond that, its either been a blank wall or too many options. If this tickles anyone's memories, it'd be greatly appreciated :) thanks, Damien Moore Melbourne, Australia

One gives a specific birth date of 14 feb 1850 in Canterbury, Kent However, this event is not sourced so you would need to investigate further to see whether this date is correct or not. 3. Hello Ken, First, my apologies for what is going to look like a long explanation. But there are two families that you need to be certain you do not confuse. The marriage certificate for Alfred Austin and Bessie Fry can be found on CityArk http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=ShowImg&Img=/cityark/Scans/Ecclesiastical_Rochester_Archdeaconry_Area_Parishes/P150_FRINDSBURY_1669_1984/01_Incumbent_Registers_1669_1984/P150_01_19.html/00000633.jpg Alfred and Bessie married, according to that marriage registration (p. 217, entry no. 433) on November 3, 1900 at Strood, Alfred being then 23 years of age and Bessie 17 years of age. Alfred's father is recorded as being George Austin, a carman. Bessie's father, also a George, was a carman but was deceased at the time of the marriage in 1900. Witnesses were Andrew Angel and Mary Fry. So, having established that you have a father's name for Alfred, one needs to look closely at the ages that he has given on documents around that time: 1900 marriage age 23 = born circa 1877 place of birth not stated 1901 census age 28 = bc 1873 at Northfleet 1911 census age 34 = bc 1877 at Swanscombe North Aylesford registration district contains the parish of Northfleet (up to 1884 and thereafter in Strood district, currently Gravesend district). Swanscombe was in Dartford district (currently Gravesend district). Wouldham and Wrotham were in Malling registration district (now Maidstone district) - for which see 1871 and 1891 information below. So, of the three entries above with only two places included, it would strongly suggest when compared to the birth registrations that occurred between 1872 and 1878 that the registration of a birth of an Alfred Austin in September quarter 1874 in Dartford district (vol. 2a, p 395) would be the best bet for being your Alfred Austin's birth. There is no registration for an Alfred Austin or Austen between 1870 and 1880 at Malling district. But, of course, birth and registration did not always happen in the same district. You will have to be careful to not confuse two families in the Wouldham area: 1) George (born Wouldham, aged 13 in 1881) son of George Austin of Lincolnshire; and, 2) George Austin with no known father who resided at the Union workhouse born Wouldham but aged only 8 in 1881. See below for more details. In 1871 George Austin of Spalding, Lincolnshire, age 58 (bc 1813) is living in Wouldham with his wife Sarai [sic] aged 48 born Lynn, Norfolk, and children: Sarai, aged 19 born Lynn Norfolk, William aged 13, born Kent Selling, Fanny aged 10, born Dunkirk, Kent, Avery, a daughter aged 8 born Wouldham, Kent, Harriott aged 6 born Wouldham, Kent and George a son, aged 3, born Wouldham, Kent. It appears that this George was registered as Austen during June quarter 1872 in Malling District, vol. 2a, p. 491. In 1881 George Austin of Spalding (as above) is still living at Wouldham with wife now named Mary but her having been born at Lynn, Norfolk, with children William, Arriett [sic], George (now aged 13) and Charles aged 10. In 1891 there is a George Austin aged 20 and Alfred Austin aged 17, both born at Wouldham, both boarders at Seal on Church Hill with George and Mary Ann Hider, perhaps both being brothers, and not being children of the George and Sarai at Wouldham in 1871. No doubt, though, that this is the family that shows up in the Union workhouse in 1881, George Austin being then aged 8 born at Wouldham. However, overall, the three registers for Church of England for Swanscombe, Northfleet and Wouldham are all available for free viewing on the Cityark website http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FZ4a_Medway_Ancestors%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList=So, it looks like you may have a bit of recourse to some parish registers toattempt to find a baptism for Alfred to a father, George.Sincerely,Susan D. 3. But in the 1901 census he and Bessie and their 4 month old daughter Bessie are living in Strood and his pob is given as Northfleet. I think he may be the same Alfred in the Malling Union in 1881 with his family, parents George and Julia. 3. Ken: What is his father's name on the marriage certificate? Perhaps we could find Alfred and his mother through his father. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Slater" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2012 2:18:12 PM Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] AUSTIN ALFRED I agree - I wouldn't assume that the Alfred in 1881 & 1891 is the same man. You have not provided any rationale on why you think it's him, other than DOB. Your man is, presumably, the one in the 1911 Census, age 34 and born in Swamcombe, wife Bessie 28, children Bessie Mary 10, Lily 6, Elise May 4 and George 10 months. They are in the 1901C at 171 Prospect Ave, Strood Intra, although Alfred is now 38(?) and born in Northfleet, Bessie is 19 and Bessie M is 10 months. Also at #171 is Mary Fay, Bessie's mother, several of Bessie's siblings and a boarder. Northfleet is acceptable as a POB because it is right next door to Swancombe. The puzzling bit is the marked difference in age. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yvonne Harris" <[email protected]> To: "ken old" <[email protected]>, [email protected] Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2012 10:20:44 AM Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] AUSTIN ALFRED Hello Ken Alfred was 80 when he died in 1956. found a birth 1976 reg Sevenoaks. 1881 He is an inmate in Wes Malling presumably a workhouse with siblings Frank 14, Julia 10, George 8, Alfred 8 William 4, and Mary 1, which suggests they were orphans, all born different places Wrotham , Wouldham milling and Barming 1891 Alfred and George boarding Church Hill, Sevenoaks. 1900 Married Bessie Fry b Strood 1823 1901 Missing 1911 Living 13 Wykham Street, Strood Children Lily 6 Elsie 4 George 10 months Can not guarantee the above is correct but almost impossible to find the parents, nothing on 1871 census for Frank.
