Hi list, I am not happy with Ancestry because I commenced my Gordon (Middlesex/Kent) family tree on a site called MUNDIA including rare family photos and when I went back to add more data my password would not work, so I sent Mundia 4 emails and had no reply. I then sent an email to Ancestry and they said they could not find my site, my Gordon's, my password or any record that I had placed anything on Mundia, so I let it go. Then I subscribed to Ancestry to commence my tree and found ALL MY GORDON FAMILY AND PRECIOUS PHOTOS ON ANCESTRY !!!, so there you go, I am so cranky and wonder what I can do about this ? I have asked for access to Mundia to remove it, but I am just ignored and I can't get into the Gordon site on Ancestry as it is not connected to my current password. Colleen NSW
Well said Susan. I too have my own website and have never shared my family tree with Ancestry. I´ve received lots of messages saying that I´m missing out on finding cousins; but what has not been appreciated it that I´ve been tracing my family for over 40 years and have found most of my cousins by doing my own research and backing it up with valid sources, the most remotest of which is a 7th cousin - our common ancestor died in 1733. Those that use Ancestry´s trees can probably lay claim to be descended from illustrious ancestors with no substantiated evidence. The only information I´ve found on Ancestry´s member´s trees has been totally incorrect; so not very useful! Hi Colleen, I´m not surprised. I did write to the list about the ethics of Ancestry/Mundia (Ancestry own Mudia) but my message was rejected by the list owner. Don´t know what you can do about it but my rejected message warned about the fact that these people have the right to use anything you upload to their sites. Hi All, Please move on from the discussion about the merits/demerits of Ancestry.com. the thread is now closed. Best regards D. Stuart Hammond Kent List Administrator
I agree it is annoying when people take information and do not give in return, which is why I mostly just have the bare bones of my tree on ancestry. That way hopefully someone will contact me asking where and how I found the information and let me know how it connects to them. That way I have new "cousins" which is great. However, what I would ask is how do you actuallyKNOW that these people have copied from you, is it not possible for them to have come to the same conclusions by completely separate research, after all, if you can find the information, so can they. Hello Connie, One does not have to "sue" Ancestry in court. Ancestry has a procedure outlined on their corporate pages of how to go about filing a copyright infringement case with them, free for all to follow and use. Just a little ingenuity and determination are all that is needed to complete their paperwork and make your case. Sincerely, Susan D. Young > Chief Executive, Ancestry Solutions Hallo The use by others of research I have done is why there is very little of my family tree on line. I would not be able to sue Ancestry or any other site for copyright. I do not have the financial resources. It is an advantage you have as the Chief Executive of a company. Connie in London
Hello, To A. Clarke, particularly, who asks: "However, what I would ask is how do you actuallyKNOW that these people have copied from you..." The mistake those who had copied from my website and from those of several friends was that the Ancestry poster had carried over all of my notes verbatim and included the "listing data" as a source. No mistake, my name and in my friends' cases, their names, were all over every page of the posted trees. Sincerely, Susan D. Young Chief Executive, Ancestry Solutions www.ancestrysolutions.com County Administrator, Kent OPC Project www.kent-opc.org
Since I am not the only descendant of my ancestors, I don't feel I can claim my research as being mine and mine only, ergo under my personal copyright. I simply copied the data found on records created by someone else into my genealogy management program. Neither did I take the photos of my ancestors with my camera, so they aren't "mine" either. Yes, I did a lot of work compiling and organizing the data, but I also borrowed from others who had already done research for the same people. Family History Research is a world of sharing common family/ancestral data. I appreciate finding data about my lines on a public website. (Of course, I never add it to my database without first confirming its accuracy.) And I publish my own research so others can benefit from my work, and I hope no one adds it to their data without confirming its accuracy. I am regularly contacted by distant relatives, whom I have never met before, regarding what I have posted. Many times they have found something useful in my data, and many times they have further data to share with me, or an alternative opinion to share with me. That helps us all get the most complete, most accurate data about our ancestral families into our files. Just my humble opinion.
