Hi Listers, Can anyone please help with a record for School Admissions for Albert Keefe on 30th Apr 1900, at Arthur St. School, Southwark. His birth was 5th Aug 1890. His father was Joseph. I have the record but wonder is anyone knows what the remark in the last column means. It says Blind Guide, then medal and another word that is indecipherable. Another child also has Blind Guide written. Does anyone know what Blind Guide is or means? Sylvia in Aus.

Chris The only James LONGDEN I could find in the hulk records was a 22 year old in 1834 who was received from York. He was convicted in Sheffield on 22 Oct 1834 for stealing money and sentenced to 14 years. He was "disposed" of to Van Diemen's Land on 13 June 1835. The records say that he was on the "Fortitude". He was described as an "Idle drinker with a bad disposition. Living by Plunder. Connected with numerous Gang of Thieves. Twice imprisoned, once convicted". Wendy Hi Listers Could anyone with access to Ancestry prison hulk records please look up James LONGDON/ LONGDEN who was sentenced to 14 years on the Justitia (off Woolwich?) circa 1834.
Hi Wendy Many thanks for the info. Doesn't look like my 4 x gg although the character description is interesting to say the least!! Hope he made a good life for himself in Australia. Probably ended up as a banker or an MP !!!! My James was born about 1764 and married in Rotherham in 1794 so perhaps they were related? Thanks again for your help. Eveline, In 1851 Sarah is at the same address in Greenwich as in 1861, 4 Morden Street, where she died. 1851 census HO107/1586 folio 564 page 46 4, Morden Street, Greenwich Sarah Gowar Head Widow 78 Independent born Chislehurst Kent John Kingston Lodger Married 27 Engineer born Bridgwater Somerset Jane Kingston Wife Married 25 born Milverton Somerset (Ancestry have indexed Sarah as GREVER, but I believe it reads GOWAR or GOWER.) Incidentally, the 1818 marriage to Thomas GOWAR was at the church of St Margaret Pattens, in Eastcheap, not at St Dunstan in the East, which was in the process of being rebuilt in that year. As one of the witnesses to the 1818 marriage was Catherine LISSNEY, and Sarah named her own daughter Catherine, it seems likely that Sarah and Catherine were sisters. Perhaps they were the daughters of John LISSNEY and Mary who were baptised at Chislehurst in 1773 and 1777 respectively (as indexed by FamilySearch). As Sarah was recorded as a spinster at marriage in 1818, it's possible that her daughter Catherine born c1811 was illegitimate. Perhaps she was named after Sarah's own sister? You would need to seek these baptisms in the Chislehurst parish registers to confirm the relationships. NWKFHS have issued unindexed scans of the images on CD. http://www.nwkfhs.org.uk/pub_pr.htm Alternatively, you could order copies of the LDS films of the Chislehurst registers into a local Family History Centre, or ask Bromley Archives to search their microfilms for you (probably cheaper and quicker than asking Maidstone to do it). Email - [email protected] HTH Judy London, UK -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of A CLARKE I am trying to find out more about Sarah Lissney who was born in Chislehurst c 1772 (she was 89 in 1861 and 90 when she died in 1862). I have not found her on the 1851, but she was aged 55 in 1841 but that census is notorious for being inaccurate with ages. Sarah married Thomas Gowar in 1818 at St Dunstan in the East. Her will was probated in 1862 by oath of Catherine Lissney daughter. Again, we do not have Catherine's birth, but according to the censuses it was also at Chislehurst (again according to the censuses) and probably c1810 give or take a few years. In 1841 her age was 30, 1851 - 42, in 1861 she was 48 and in 1871 she was 64, so there is quite a bit of disparity there. Regards Eveline

In 1841, she is in Greenwich, age 55 with a DOB of c1786. Lots of children with her, as well as a Catherine Lissney a few lines higher up. No sign of Thomas but she has a son named Thomas. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Lester" <[email protected]> To: "A CLARKE" <[email protected]>, [email protected] Sent: Saturday, July 7, 2012 11:56:54 AM Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] Lissney - Chislehurst Eveline, In 1851 Sarah is at the same address in Greenwich as in 1861, 4 Morden Street, where she died. 1851 census HO107/1586 folio 564 page 46 4, Morden Street, Greenwich Sarah Gowar Head Widow 78 Independent born Chislehurst Kent John Kingston Lodger Married 27 Engineer born Bridgwater Somerset Jane Kingston Wife Married 25 born Milverton Somerset (Ancestry have indexed Sarah as GREVER, but I believe it reads GOWAR or GOWER.) Hi Everyone I'm doing research into the above pub, The Hampshire Hogg, which was (is?) in High St. Woolwich. My GGreat Uncle had this pub for a few years and I would like to find perhaps old photos/history/stories etc to add the family history The 1827/8 Pigot's lists a William Burne (BYRNE) for the Hampshire Hogg also William appears on Pigots national and Commercial directory in 1832/33/34/ for Pubs and Brewers of Kent. The Hampshire Hog High St. Woolwich Kent. He doesn't seem to have the pub by the 1841 or 1851 Census but still seems to be living in High St. Woolwich Any help much appreciated kind regards Dianna
A couple of weeks ago I posted the message below and have decided to just purchase the death certificate to see what it says. It will of course take some weeks to arrive here in Aus. At the time of the posting I was awaiting a death certificate for Charlotte's daughter Annie who married Alfred Coleman. It has now arrived and to my surprise she died in the same Kent County Asylum in 1918. She was not buried in Kent but back in St Botolph's in Worthing. I am curious because in 1911 she was a patient of Graylingwell Hospital which is very close to Worthing but seems to have ended up in Oakwood. Does anyone know why this might have been? It seems that Graylingwell was still in use and I don't understand why a person would be admitted to an institution in another county other than their own. If I am right about the C.N. in the census in 1881 and 1891, it would seem that again there was a transfer of some kind between institutions in different counties. I find it a bit spooky that if this Charlotte does turn out to be Annie's mother, that they were both in the same institution albeit 20 years apart. I have had a look at the A2A site and there are SO many registers - can anyone recommend which register would give me some insight to their incarceration or be able to suggest a researcher that could perform a search for me?
