Hi all, does anyone know if the “missing/lost” records for East Farleigh are available in the Bishops/Archbishops records in the Canterbury Cathedral archives? Have had a missing whole in my “tree” for the last 20 years or so. Thanks in anticipation, Jill Coles
Thank you to Carol, Judy and Diane .. for your help. I am going to try and plod through Cityark .. .see if I can see something .. The reason I am asking about Mary Barton .. is ... someone else on ancestry has her ancestors as royalty ... and I can't see how the family came from royalty down to farmers .. :) .. All supposition with no sources .. as far as I can see. Just shows you .. how we never really know for 'sure' if the people we are thinking are ours ... might not be. Darn frustrating ..lol cheers Maree
Someone is obviously having a bad day ! Nice of you to share it with us ! Have a lie down and a cuppa and you'll soon feel better. Hi all .. I am wondering if someone would be kind enough to help me here please ? I have been looking for the family of Mary BARTON, she married Richard TRICE in St. Pauls Parish, Deptford, Co. Kent on 13 Nov 1774. I cannot find her death. The problem I am having is not understanding how close all these places are to each other and if they travelled or moved from their homes. I did find a baptism for Mary Barton in 1748, (Sutton At Hone, Kent) and another in 1749, with parents .. William and Elizabeth. I am not certain she is the same person who married Richard Trice in Lewisham in 1774. Why were there two .. maybe one child died first .. are they the same family ? If she is the correct person .. then her parents are .. William and Elizabeth ... there are many .. but cannot find a marriage for certain. There is one in Jan 1743 in Pembury, Kent, William Barden and Elizabeth Edwards .. and I figured Pembury is 25 miles from Sutton At Hone where their dau Mary would have been born. Is this possible in the 1700s ? The William that I found (assuming it is the same one) looks to have died in Woolwich, Kent in 1789. There is also a probable birth/baptism for a William Barton, 9 Jun 1714 in Hadlow, Kent, father John. Also another for William son of John and Ann Barton 9 Mar 1709. There are quite a lot of them .. and finding out which family member matches with another is proving quite a challenge for me .. All I do know for certain is .. Richard TRICE married Mary Barton :) in 1774. any help/suggestions appreciated here ... thank you very much .. regards Maree Larsen Hobart

Hi Maree, Do you know for certain that Mary Barton was born in Kent? If you do you should know that there are only a small percentage of baptisms for Kent available on-line and there are several hundred parishes in Kent. There were 2 parish churches in Deptford in the 1700s with little on-line coverage, so she could actually have been born in Deptford. Without some knowledge of her origins and parentage I´m afraid you are looking for a needle in a haystack as BARTON is not an uncommon name. My best suggestion would be to eliminate Deptford parishes first (St. Nicholas and St Paul) - they should be available for searching at your local LDS centre. In the 1700s the only way to get from rural Kent would be to walk unless you had the money to pay for transport and normally only the wealthy could afford that. As for two children being called the same in a family, it was common practice to name a second child the same as one who had died. Sorry no positive suggestions, but I hope this will help you going on a wild goose chase and probably tracing the wrong family. Diane
Maree, Baptisms for the relevant period at both St Nicholas Deptford (London Borough of Greenwich) and St Paul Deptford (London Borough of Lewisham) are available via Ancestry, indexed and with images. Maree, I had the same problem until I purchased the latest version of the "AA Big Easy Read BRITAIN" road atlas map. All my troubles were over and I could even plan trips to the UK. Not to mention it was large enough to see easily. You can find it at bookstores or order it online. Well worth the money. Hello Janis. I have been searching for this guy for some years, and I think I have looked everywhere, including Speldhurst.
