    3. Dear Trish Elizabeth Newman/Francis Newman/Anne Newman Thank you so much for your help and for typing out all the details from Family Search. I stupidly thought that if she didn't come up on Ancestry she wouldn't come up anywhere! I was wrong! Brilliant help! Now my Newman brick wall is well and truly down! ISBN 0 902633 79 1. The book is purely on the formation of volunteer corps and although there are some b&w photographs of volunteers and their insignia; there are none of the Kent volunteers. The earliest photograph is 1876. Basically volunteers were the equivalent of a 'home guard', the Duke of Wellington probably being responsible for the formation of the Volunteer Force in 1859. Men were recruited locally and it isn't thought that volunteer forces served overseas. Mr Westlake includes information on the Kent Volunteer Rifles and uses the 5 corps of 1880 as a basis, listing a number of corps under each heading giving their formation and disbandment dates and places. There are 5 pages of information. It really depends on where your distant 3rd cousin lived and even his occupation as to where he served and which corps i.e. "76th Corps: Formed on 26 March 1860 26 March 1860 by men working in the wharves, stores, distilleries and saw-mills of Port Dundas." "72nd Corps: This corps was also known as the 'Fine Arts' and was raised by jewellers, silversmiths and watch and clockmakers. Formed 23 February 1860." 3. Hi Stuart, If you Google - Shorncliffe Camp - there is much information which may be able to help Daryl from Oz -----Original Message----- From: kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Stuart Hammond Sent: Friday, 9 August 2013 6:36 PM To: kent-eng-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [KENT-ENG] Kent List - Life changing Visits, Holidays or excursions our ancestors took Hi All, I note that it has been strangely quiet on the Kent List, so to promote a few postings, I am going to suggest that you might post about a visit, holiday or excursion which an ancestor made, which in some way changed the course of the family history. To start this off : My grandmother, Elizabeth HODGES (born 9th March 1894 Sellindge, Hythe, Kent), went into domestic service in Surrey in 1911 and at sometime around 1918/19 met a young soldier Edward James PUNCHARD (born about 1889 from Norfolk), who at that time was a Corporal in the Machine Gun Corps based at Shorncliffe. They married on 13th January 1920 at Elham Registry Office and when he was posted to India, Elizabeth went with him, along with their son James born on 17th November 1920.  Initially things went well and Edward was promoted to become a Farrier Sergeant stationed in Meerut, India but unfortunately whilst there, the relationship between Elizabeth and Edward broke down, perhaps through his drinking, and she left him. Shortly afterwards in 1922, he died possibly at his own hand. Elizabeth stayed on in India for a short time, returning to England, where she met and married at the Wesleyan Methodist Church on 5th April 1926, my granddad, Henry Sisley BIRCH (born 29th April 1897) who at that time lived at Gibbons Brook, Sellindge. Many years later my grandmother wrote a moving account of her time in India, though never discussed the death of her first husband. Had she not gone to India, I would never have been born, since my mother Kathleen Ruth BIRCH was born from the second marriage on 12th January 1927 at Grange Cottage, Sellindge, Kent. So my questions that arise out of this are : Can anyone tell me anything about Shorncliffe Camp? What was it like to be in India in the 1920s? In the 1911 census my grandmother was working as a general servant in a girls school Drumgowan, Alexandra School, Surrey. This seems quite a distance from the family who were based in  2 Oak Cottage, Sellindge, Kent. Can anyone suggest why? All the best D. Hallo I'd say probably be the LDS over the Society of Genealogists because the LDS could digitise it and make it available online whilst keeping the original in storage until the end of time. Perhaps you could ask for it to be digitised? I know the Kent Archives would be a favourite but that would mean anyone interested would have to travel there to see it. The Society of Genealogists has the same limitation. -- Connie http://oursalmons.wordpress.com/

    3. Dear Listers Can anyone help me find out more about Elizabeth Newman who was the second wife of my great grandfather John Glanville Bogg married at St. Nicholas Church, Plumstead, Kent on 2nd December 1882. Her father is stated as Francis Newman Watchmaker and one of the witnesses is Anne Newman. Presume that is her sister or maybe her mother. Elizabeth died only three years later as Elizabeth Bogg aged just 32 in Plumstead in 1885 which makes her born in 1853 but I can't find her on the censuses before her marriage. I don't know where she was born! Some people have put her on their tree as being born in Dover but the censuses they show say her father was Thomas! John's first wife Mary McCarthy died of T.B. Elizabeth too died of T.B. I suspect that Elizabeth was working as a housekeeper for the family whilst Mary was dying. Can anyone find her on the 1881 census living near John Bogg? He was living at 24 Richmond Street, Plumstead East and is listed as Arsenal Labourer aged 36 widower living with his three sons John, Daniel and Edmund. Poor John lost his first wife and three of his children from his first marriage, then his second wife and their son in 1885. Then his third wife (my great grandmother) did survive him and so did his six children from his third marriage but the poor man drowned himself by jumping into the river Thames from the Free Woolwich Ferry because he was in terrible pain from bowel cancer! What a difficult life! -- --- Regards Frances Lee

Formed 23 February 1860." Did they ever see service overseas? Or were they home guard? A distant 3rd cousin was a member for about 20 years (c1850s-1870s) Thanks for any information or web site details, Peter, Melbourne, Australia ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to KENT-ENG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hi Bob A couple of points: You won't find parents' names in an 1829 marriage register (in fact, you won't find mothers' names even now). If the marriage was by licence rather than bans AND if the bride (and/or groom) was under age, the licence allegation *should* say who gave consent, which would normally be the father but could be the mother (or an uncle or whatever) if the father was dead. I suggest hiring in the film of the register from your nearest LDS centre. "Sister in law" was a term used more loosely then than now, but it is probable that she was Phoebe's sister, as she appears to have been born a VENISON (she is unmarried in 1851). 3. Bob Have you considered the idea that Phoebe might have been a widow when she married George Knight? Might be worth a check for an earlier marriage. 3. The Medway Ark site,"Medway Ancestors" is in the Diocese of Rochester but is only concerned with the Deanery of Rochester not the other other part of the diocese. If you log on to "Medway Ancestors" you will find a list of ALL the parishes in the Rochester Deanery.
